Thesis Abstract
In response to escalating environmental concerns and the declining productivity of conventional farming methods, this study addresses the critical challenge of enhancing farmer adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. Despite the well-documented benefits of practices such as crop diversification, soil conservation, and integrated pest management, adoption rates among smallholder farmers remain suboptimal due to factors including limited awareness, socio-economic constraints, and perceived risks. The primary aim of this research is to develop a comprehensive framework that effectively promotes farmer engagement with sustainable practices, thereby contributing to environmental conservation and rural livelihoods. To achieve this aim, the study establishes specific objectives identifying key determinants influencing adoption behavior, evaluating existing extension approaches, integrating socio-cultural factors, and proposing a practical implementation model. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to generate a holistic understanding of the adoption dynamics. The quantitative component involves a cross-sectional survey of 400 randomly selected smallholder farmers within the Riverine Plains Agricultural Zone, utilizing structured questionnaires administered through trained enumerators. The qualitative component includes focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with extension agents, local leaders, and a subset of farmers, to contextualize quantitative findings and explore underlying motivations and barriers. Data collected will undergo statistical analysis through multiple regression analysis to determine significant predictors of adoption, while thematic analysis will be used to interpret qualitative insights, facilitated by NVivo software. The study is grounded in the Diffusion of Innovations Theory and the Social Practice Theory, which collectively inform the development of the proposed framework. These theories underpin an analytical model integrating individual farmer attributes, social networks, extension service efficacy, and socio-cultural influences. It is anticipated that the findings will reveal that variables such as farmers’ education level, access to credible information, peer influence, and perceived economic benefits significantly impact adoption decisions. Key expected outcomes include a validated framework illustrating pathways for effective promotion of sustainable agriculture, and identification of leverage points for extension strategies to accelerate adoption rates. The research anticipates a positive correlation between farmers’ participation in extension programs and their likelihood to adopt sustainable methods, moderated by socio-cultural factors. The findings are expected to demonstrate the importance of tailored extension approaches that address specific socio-economic contexts, community norms, and farmers’ perceptions. This study contributes new insights into the integration of behavioral, social, and institutional factors within agricultural extension frameworks, expanding theoretical and practical understanding of sustainable practice adoption. By operationalizing the model through actionable guidelines, the research aims to inform policy formulation and extension programming, ultimately fostering resilient and environmentally sustainable agricultural systems. The study concludes that a multidimensional approach—combining targeted communication, peer learning, and culturally sensitive extension methods—is essential to increasing sustainable practice adoption. It recommends enhancing extension service capacity, fostering participatory approaches, and developing context-specific promotion strategies. Future research directions include longitudinal studies to assess long-term impacts and the applicability of the framework across different agro-ecological zones. Overall, this research underscores the importance of holistic, context-aware strategies in transforming agricultural practices towards sustainability, with broad implications for policymakers, extension agents, and rural communities alike.

First, it will review relevant literature on agricultural extension, farmer behavior, and sustainability theories, such as the Theory of Planned Behavior and Diffusion of Innovations. Next, it will collect data from around 300 farmers through surveys and interviews to understand their perceptions, motivations, and barriers. The data will be analyzed using statistical methods like regression analysis to identify key factors influencing adoption. Qualitative data from interviews will be analyzed thematically to gain deeper insights.
The expected outcome is a tested model that highlights the main drivers and barriers to sustainable practice adoption, along with strategies for extension services to foster adoption. This framework will provide policymakers and agricultural extension agents with practical guidance. Ultimately, the study aims to contribute to academic knowledge while offering actionable solutions to promote sustainable farming, leading to healthier ecosystems and more resilient rural communities.
