Thesis Abstract

The integration of visual arts into curricular design has gained increasing recognition for its potential to enhance creativity, critical thinking, and holistic student development; however, existing approaches often lack a comprehensive framework that systematically aligns artistic elements with core educational objectives across diverse disciplines. This study aims to develop a holistic, adaptable framework for integrating visual arts into curricular design that fosters interdisciplinary learning and promotes learner-centered pedagogies. The specific objectives are to (1) examine current models of arts integration within curricula, (2) identify foundational principles that facilitate effective incorporation of visual arts, (3) formulate an integrative framework grounded in constructivist and experiential learning theories, and (4) validate the framework through empirical testing in selected educational settings. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to ensure comprehensive validation of the proposed framework. The qualitative phase involves thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with 25 curricula designers, art educators, and classroom teachers across five secondary schools, aimed at uncovering contextual factors and pedagogical strategies that influence arts integration. Concurrently, the quantitative phase employs a quasi-experimental design with a sample of 200 students from the participating schools, randomly assigned to experimental and control groups, to assess the impact of the framework-implemented curriculum on students’ creative thinking, engagement, and academic performance. Data collection instruments include validated surveys measuring creative thinking (e.g., Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking), engagement scales, and academic assessments aligned with curriculum standards. Reliability and validity are ensured through pilot testing, expert review, and factor analysis, with multiple regression analysis used to examine relationships between framework implementation and student outcomes. To analyze qualitative data, thematic coding facilitated the identification of emergent themes pertinent to framework components and pedagogical practices, while quantitative data are analyzed via descriptive statistics, t-tests, and multiple regression analyses to assess the significance and strength of relationships among variables. The study hypothesizes that the implemented framework will significantly enhance students’ creativity, engagement, and interdisciplinary understanding compared to conventional curricula. The expected findings include a robust set of principles and practical guidelines embedding visual arts deeply within curricular structures, supported by empirical evidence demonstrating their effectiveness in diverse educational contexts. The contribution to knowledge lies in providing an empirically validated, theoretically grounded holistic framework that integrates visual arts seamlessly into curriculum design, addressing the current gap of fragmented or superficial arts integration strategies. The framework advances understanding of pedagogical processes that foster creativity and critical thinking across disciplines, offering a scalable model adaptable to various educational levels and systems. Additionally, the study enriches the theoretical discourse by integrating constructivist and experiential learning theories into arts-integrated curriculum development. The main conclusion suggests that a well-structured, holistic framework significantly enhances the educational value of visual arts within curricula, promoting interdisciplinary synergy and learner engagement. Recommendations include the adoption of the framework by curriculum developers, professional development of educators in arts integration strategies, and further research to adapt and refine the model in different cultural and institutional contexts. Future studies are suggested to explore longitudinal effects of arts-integrated curricula and their impact on learner outcomes beyond academic metrics. This research underscores the transformative potential of visual arts as a core element of holistic education and provides a pragmatic approach for policymakers, educators, and curriculum designers to realize that potential systematically.

Thesis Overview

This research aims to develop a comprehensive and practical framework to help educators effectively incorporate visual arts into the design of school curricula. The core idea is that integrating arts into various subjects can enhance student creativity, critical thinking, and engagement, but currently, there is no clear, systematic guide on how to do this seamlessly across different disciplines. Many curricula include visual arts as a separate subject, but there is limited understanding of how arts can support and enrich other areas like science, mathematics, or language arts. The problem this study addresses is the lack of an overarching model or framework that guides educators in embedding visual arts into the overall curriculum in a way that is meaningful, balanced, and sustainable. The researcher will review existing theories and models about arts integration and curriculum design, focusing on frameworks like the Tichenor and Augenstein arts integration model and theories such as Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences and the concept of holistic education. The researcher will collect data through a mixed-method approach. First, they will conduct interviews and focus group discussions with 30 experienced teachers from different subject areas who have attempted arts integration. Then, a survey will be administered to 150 teachers to gather broader perspectives. Qualitative data will be analyzed using thematic analysis to identify common themes and strategies, while quantitative data will be examined through descriptive statistics and correlation analysis to understand factors influencing successful arts integration. The expected outcome is a validated, adaptable framework that guides teachers on how to integrate visual arts into various subjects effectively. This framework aims to improve curriculum relevance and student outcomes and provide a practical tool for educational policymakers and school administrators. Overall, the study will contribute to the theoretical understanding of arts integration and offer a useful model for practical implementation, ultimately promoting more creative, engaging, and holistic learning experiences in schools.
