Thesis Abstract
The rapid urbanization and economic development witnessed in recent decades have intensified the pressure on heritage buildings, leading to their neglect, inappropriate modifications, or demolition, thereby threatening cultural identity and sustainable urban environments. This study addresses the critical need for a comprehensive framework that guides the sustainable adaptive reuse of heritage structures, balancing conservation values with modern functional requirements and environmental considerations. The primary aim of this research is to develop an integrated framework that facilitates sustainable adaptive reuse practices, ensuring that heritage buildings remain relevant and environmentally responsible for future generations. To achieve this, the study articulates specific objectives to analyze existing models and theories underpinning heritage conservation and sustainable design, to identify key factors influencing successful adaptive reuse, and to synthesize these insights into a practical framework adaptable across diverse urban contexts. The research employs a mixed-methods design, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the complex dimensions involved in heritage building reuse. The qualitative phase involves desktop review and thematic analysis of 50 case studies from Europe, North America, and Asia, retrieved from academic journals, heritage conservation reports, and urban planning documentation. This phase aims to identify prevalent practices, challenges, and success factors, guided by the theoretical underpinnings of the Conservation Ethics Theory and the Triple Bottom Line Framework.
