Medication non-adherence remains a pervasive challenge in healthcare systems worldwide, contributing significantly to suboptimal clinical outcomes, increased hospitalizations, and escalating healthcare costs. Despite established strategies aimed at improving adherence, the integration of technology-driven solutions, particularly mobile health applications, remains underexplored in many settings. This study addresses the critical need for innovative tools to monitor and promote medication adherence through the development of a tailored mobile application designed to facilitate medication management, deliver personalized patient education, and enable real-time adherence monitoring. The primary aim is to create and evaluate a user-centered mobile app that enhances medication adherence and empowers patients through education and behavioral prompts. The specific objectives of this study are threefold to design and develop a mobile application specifically targeting medication adherence, to assess the usability and acceptability of the app among adult patients with chronic illnesses, and to evaluate the app’s effectiveness in improving medication adherence over a six-month period. The study further aims to explore the influence of health literacy and socio-demographic variables on adherence outcomes facilitated by the app. Methodologically, the study adopts a mixed-methods research design anchored in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Health Belief Model (HBM). The study also advances theoretical understanding by testing the applicability of TAM and HBM in this context. In conclusion, the mobile application offers a feasible, cost-effective, and scalable solution for improving medication adherence and patient education. Recommendations include broader implementation of the app within healthcare systems, further development to include multimedia educational content, and integration with electronic health records for comprehensive care management. Future research should explore long-term adherence sustainability, scalability in different healthcare settings, and the potential for incorporating artificial intelligence for personalized adherence interventions.
