Thesis Abstract

The escalating prevalence of stress among college students has emerged as a significant concern for higher education institutions, impacting academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being. Traditional stress management approaches have often been limited by accessibility and engagement issues, prompting a growing interest in digital health interventions. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of mobile mindfulness applications in reducing perceived stress levels among college students. Specifically, it investigates whether regular use of such apps can significantly lower stress, improve emotional regulation, and enhance overall mental health. The research adopts a quantitative, quasi-experimental design with a control group, involving a sample of 300 undergraduate students from a major university, stratified randomly into intervention and control groups. Participants in the intervention group (n=150) engaged with a selected mindfulness app, Calm, for an eight-week period, following a structured daily practice schedule of 10 minutes per session, whereas the control group (n=150) did not participate in any formal stress reduction intervention during this period. Data collection instruments included the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), and a mobile app adherence log, all validated in prior research. Pre- and post-intervention assessments were conducted to measure changes in stress levels, emotional regulation, and app engagement. Quantitative data were analyzed using paired sample t-tests and ANCOVA to examine within- and between-group differences while controlling for baseline scores. Additionally, multiple regression analysis explored the predictive power of app adherence on reductions in stress and improvements in emotional regulation. Moreover, the study will identify key factors influencing app engagement and sustained use, providing practical insights for developers and educators seeking to incorporate digital mindfulness solutions into student wellness programs. The primary conclusion posits that mobile mindfulness applications are effective complementary tools for stress management among college students, with adherence playing a critical role in determining outcomes. Based on these findings, the study recommends integrating mobile mindfulness apps into existing student mental health services, promoting app engagement through targeted motivational strategies, and fostering further research on longitudinal impacts and diverse student populations to enhance generalizability. This investigation advances the understanding of technology-based mental health interventions and offers actionable pathways for universities committed to fostering resilient, healthy student communities through innovative, scalable digital solutions.
