Thesis Abstract
Community-based theatre organizations play a vital role in fostering cultural identity, social cohesion, and artistic expression; however, many such organizations face persistent challenges in effectively engaging their audiences and expanding their reach within diverse communities. This study investigates the dynamics of audience engagement and development strategies employed by community-based theatre groups, with the overarching aim of identifying effective practices that enhance audience participation and retention. The specific objectives include examining the contextual factors influencing audience engagement, assessing the impact of targeted outreach programs, and identifying barriers and facilitators to sustained audience development. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative data to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomena. The quantitative component involves a survey of 150 audience members across three prominent community theatres using a structured questionnaire designed to measure levels of engagement, satisfaction, and demographic variables. The qualitative component encompasses semi-structured interviews with 12 key stakeholders, including theatre directors, outreach coordinators, and regular audience representatives, to explore nuanced perspectives on engagement practices and organizational challenges. Data are analyzed through descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression to identify significant predictors of audience retention. Thematic analysis is employed to interpret interview transcripts, revealing recurrent themes related to community involvement, program relevance, and outreach efficacy. Expected findings suggest that personalized engagement approaches, community involvement initiatives, and the use of digital media significantly contribute to increased audience participation and loyalty. Conversely, barriers such as limited funding, inadequate marketing, and institutional rigidity hinder audience development efforts. The study hypothesizes that organizations with strategic outreach programs and flexible programming are more successful in cultivating a diverse and committed audience base. It is anticipated that the findings will substantiate the application of theoretical models such as the Audience Development Framework and the Theory of Planned Behavior in explaining and improving engagement strategies within community theatre settings. This research contributes to existing knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of specific audience development practices within community-based theatre organizations, thereby filling gaps identified in prior literature regarding contextual and organizational factors influencing engagement. Moreover, the integration of the Audience Development Framework with empirical data offers a practical model for theatre practitioners seeking to implement sustainable engagement strategies tailored to their community contexts. Concluding, the study emphasizes the importance of adaptive, community-centered programming and strategic outreach in fostering long-term audience relationships. Recommendations include adopting an integrated engagement approach that combines traditional outreach with digital engagement platforms, increasing collaborative initiatives with community organizations, and allocating resources toward audience research. Additionally, the study advocates for capacity-building efforts to enhance organizational flexibility and marketing sophistication. The findings underscore the necessity for community theatres to embrace innovative, culturally responsive engagement practices to sustain relevance and vitality in increasingly diverse social landscapes. Future research avenues suggested include longitudinal studies to assess the long-term impact of engagement strategies and comparative analyses across different regional contexts to delineate best practices for audience development in community theatre settings.
Thesis Overview
This research focuses on understanding how community-based theatre organizations can better engage their audiences and attract more people to their performances. Many local theatre groups face the challenge of declining audiences or limited community participation, which threatens their sustainability and impact. The study aims to explore what specific strategies and practices can effectively increase audience attendance and foster stronger community involvement through theatre.
The problem this research addresses is the lack of detailed knowledge about what works best for community theatres in terms of reaching diverse groups, encouraging repeated attendance, and creating meaningful connections with local communities. While there is some existing research on audience development in commercial or mainstream theatre, little is known about the unique circumstances and needs of grassroots or community-based theatre organizations.
The researcher will follow a step-by-step approach. First, they will select a sample of community theatre groups in a specific city or region, aiming for around ten organizations. Data will be collected through mixed methods: interviews with theatre practitioners, surveys from audience members, and observations of theatre events. The interviews will seek insights into current engagement practices, while the surveys will measure audience motivations, satisfaction, and loyalty. Observations will help understand the events' atmosphere and outreach efforts.
The collected data will be analyzed using thematic analysis for qualitative interview data, and statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics and correlation analysis for survey results. This combined approach will help identify effective engagement strategies and audience preferences.
The study will contribute new knowledge by pinpointing practical ways that community theatres can develop richer, more sustainable relationships with their audiences. It will also fill gaps in existing literature about grassroots arts organizations.
The expected outcome is a set of actionable recommendations for community theatre groups to improve audience participation and long-term engagement, ensuring their cultural relevance and vitality in the community.
