Thesis Abstract

The increasing volume of literary scholarship and critical texts necessitates more efficient tools for organizing, analyzing, and synthesizing sources to enhance literary analysis processes. Traditional bibliographic methods, often reliant on manual compilation and annotation, are increasingly inadequate for managing the complexity and depth required for comprehensive literary research, thereby impeding scholars' ability to efficiently retrieve, cross-reference, and critically evaluate sources. This study aims to design, develop, and empirically evaluate a digital annotated bibliography tool tailored specifically for literary analysis, with the goal of improving researchers' efficiency and depth of engagement with literary texts and critical resources. The research sets out to fulfill three specific objectives (1) to identify the key functional requirements for an effective digital annotated bibliography tool for literary scholars; (2) to design and implement a prototype application integrating features such as hierarchical categorization, hyperlinking, multimedia annotations, and collaborative functionality; (3) to evaluate the usability, efficiency, and scholarly impact of the tool through empirical testing involving postgraduate literature students. The study employs a mixed-methods research design, combining quantitative surveys and usability testing with qualitative interviews and thematic analysis. The population comprises 120 postgraduate students enrolled in literature programs across five major UK universities. A stratified random sampling technique selected a sample of 60 students for usability testing and 60 for survey and interview participation. Data collection instruments include structured questionnaires measuring perceived usefulness and ease of use based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), usability testing protocols, and semi-structured interview guides. Validity and reliability of the instruments are established through pilot testing, Cronbach's alpha analysis, and expert validation. Quantitative data are analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and regression analysis to assess relationships between perceived ease of use, usefulness, and intention to adopt the tool. Qualitative data are subjected to thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s approach, with coding verified by multiple independent researchers to enhance trustworthiness. Expected findings indicate that the digital annotated bibliography tool significantly enhances the efficiency of sourcing, organizing, and critically analyzing literary texts and scholarly articles, as reflected in improvements in time-on-task and depth of annotations produced. It is anticipated that perceived usefulness and ease of use will be strong predictors of researchers’ willingness to adopt the tool, substantiated through regression analyses revealing statistically significant relationships (p < 0.01). Qualitative findings are expected to reveal that features such as multimedia support, collaborative annotation, and hierarchical organization are particularly valued by postgraduate students, fostering deeper engagement and critical reflection on literary texts. This research contributes to knowledge by presenting a technologically driven framework for supporting literary analysis and academic research, filling gaps identified in existing bibliographic management tools that lack domain-specific functionalities for literary scholarship. The integration of theoretical insights from the Cognitive Load Theory and the Theory of Planned Behavior enhances understanding of interface design and user acceptance, respectively. The study advances the field of digital humanities by providing a user-centered, empirically validated tool tailored to the unique needs of literary scholars and students. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that a purpose-built digital annotated bibliography tool can meaningfully improve the efficiency, depth, and scholarly engagement in literary research. Recommendations include further refinement of collaborative features, integration with existing academic databases, and exploration of adaptive interfaces tailored to different levels of user expertise. Future research should examine longitudinal effects on research productivity and the potential for integration with semantic analysis algorithms to further enrich literary analysis capabilities. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of domain-specific digital tools in enhancing the quality and impact of literary scholarship.
