Thesis Abstract

Thesis Overview

This thesis investigates how generative AI practices are shaping commercial banking in France, using Crédit Agricole as a detailed case study. The core idea is to understand how tools that can create text, images, or other content autonomously are changing customer interactions, decision making, risk management, product development, and internal processes in a major retail bank. Why it matters: Generative AI has the potential to alter efficiency, service quality, and regulatory compliance in retail banking. Yet there is limited in-depth understanding of how these technologies are adopted in practice within a specific French banking context, how employees and customers perceive them, and what governance, ethical, and operational challenges arise. The study aims to fill gaps about the real-world impact, benefits, and risks of generative AI in a tightly scoped environment. What problem or knowledge gap it addresses: There is a disconnect between high-level claims of AI benefits and the actual organizational changes, workflows, and customer outcomes that result from implementing generative AI. The research seeks to map these dynamics within Crédit Agricole, identify which AI applications are most impactful, and examine how governance structures, data quality, and change management influence outcomes. What the researcher will do step by step: 1) Define a research framework drawing on institutional theory and technology-organization-environment (TOE) perspectives. 2) Conduct a literature review to identify expected benefits and risks of generative AI in banking. 3) Collect data from multiple sources: a) semi-structured interviews with 15-20 frontline employees, risk managers, and IT staff; b) surveys of 200 customers to gauge perceptions and satisfaction; c) internal documents and governance policies; d) system usage logs for objective usage patterns. 4) Analyze qualitative data with thematic analysis to uncover patterns in adoption, governance, and employee and customer experiences; analyze quantitative survey data with regression analysis to test relationships between AI usage, perceived value, and customer satisfaction; use descriptive statistics for usage metrics. 5) Integrate findings to develop a conceptual model of generative AI impact in Crédit Agricole and compare with existing literature. Expected contribution: the study will provide context-rich evidence on the practical benefits, limitations, and risks of generative AI in a large French bank, contribute to the refinement of a governance and ethics framework, and offer actionable guidance for banks facing similar deployments. Expected outcome: a validated model linking AI usage to operational efficiency, customer experience, and risk indicators, plus recommendations for policy, training, and responsible innovation within Crédit Agricole and comparable institutions.
