The resilience of rural farm cooperatives in Scotland faces additional pressures from volatile agricultural markets, climate variability, labour constraints, and evolving policy regimes, which collectively threaten continuity, member engagement, and financial viability. This study addresses how farm cooperatives in Scotland adapt to these multifaceted shocks, with particular emphasis on organizational capacity, governance, access to markets and finance, and social capital among member farmers. The aim is to develop an evidence-based understanding of resilience trajectories within rural farm cooperatives and to identify mechanisms that sustain cooperative functioning and member value under stress. Specific objectives are (1) to map the structural and governance configurations of Scottish farm cooperatives and their exposure to exogenous shocks; (2) to quantify the relationship between governance quality, financial diversification, and resilience outcomes; (3) to examine the role of social capital, trust, and social learning in collective adaptation; (4) to assess how market access, value-added activities, and processing capacity influence robustness during disruption; and (5) to generate practical implications for policy and cooperative management to enhance long-term sustainability. A mixed-methods design guides the inquiry, combining a cross-sectional survey with in-depth case studies. The population comprises all registered rural farm cooperatives in Scotland as of 2023, with a target sample of 60 cooperatives for the survey, selected via stratified random sampling to ensure representation across geography, farm type, and market orientation. Three illustrative case study cooperatives are chosen using purposive sampling based on diversity in size, geographic location, and resilience performance indicators. Case study comparatives may reveal that cooperatives with proactive risk governance and embedded learning ecosystems demonstrate faster recovery and continuity of member services post-disruption, while those with complacent governance exhibit stagnation or decline. The study contributes to knowledge by integrating governance, financial strategy, and social dynamics to illuminate resilience in rural cooperatives—an area with limited cross-disciplinary synthesis. It offers a transferable analytical framework for evaluating resilience in similar agrarian cooperative settings elsewhere, and it informs policy design regarding cooperative support, rural development, and agricultural market stabilization. The main conclusion is that resilience in Scottish rural farm cooperatives emerges from an integrated architecture of participatory governance, diversified and value-added revenues, and potent social capital that enables rapid collective learning and adaptive decision-making. Recommendations include strengthening governance training for boards, expanding access to cooperative finance and shared processing facilities, fostering knowledge networks and trust-building interventions among members, and developing policy instruments that incentivize risk reduction and diversification. The study suggests avenues for longitudinal follow-up to monitor resilience trajectories and to test the applicability of the proposed model across other rural contexts.
