Thesis Abstract
Contemporary digital art practices are increasingly characterized by a reliance on diverse materials and technological components that raise significant sustainability concerns. The rapid advancement of digital tools and innovative media has resulted in substantial environmental impacts, including electronic waste, energy consumption, and resource depletion, necessitating the development of sustainable frameworks that guide material integration within digital art processes. This study aims to formulate a comprehensive framework for sustainable material integration tailored to contemporary digital art practices, with specific objectives to identify key sustainable materials and technologies, analyze current eco-friendly approaches in digital art, and develop a set of actionable guidelines for practitioners and institutions. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines qualitative interviews and focus group discussions with digital artists, curators, and art educators (sample size of 60 participants selected via purposive sampling) with quantitative surveys administered to a broader population of 200 digital artists across Europe and North America. Data collection instruments include semi-structured interview guides, online questionnaires, and visual documentation diodes, ensuring triangulation of insights related to material use, sustainability perceptions, and technological trends. The qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis using NVivo software to identify prevailing themes, while quantitative data will be subjected to descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis using SPSS to examine relationships between material choices and sustainability attitudes. Additionally, the study integrates the Technological-Environmental Sustainability Framework and Actor-Network Theory to underpin the analytical process, providing a theoretical basis for understanding the interactions between technology, materials, and environmental concerns within digital art ecosystems. Expected key findings include a comprehensive catalog of sustainable materials and technological strategies currently employed or feasible within digital art practices, insights into artists’ perceptions of sustainability, and identification of barriers and motivators for adopting eco-friendly materials. The research anticipates revealing significant correlations between awareness of environmental impacts and the likelihood of integrating sustainable materials, as well as highlighting gaps in existing technological solutions for eco-conscious digital art production. This research will contribute novel theoretical insights by extending existing sustainability models to encompass the digital art context and by integrating actor-network analyses specific to artistic material ecosystems. Practically, the framework developed will serve as a reference for digital artists, curators, and educational curricula, promoting environmentally responsible practices through clear guidelines and resource recommendations. The study concludes that sustainable material integration in digital art is essential for reducing environmental impacts without compromising artistic innovation, and it proposes that a systemic, interdisciplinary approach—combining technological innovation, policy advocacy, and educational initiatives—is crucial for advancing sustainable digital art practices. Recommendations include the adoption of standardized sustainability assessments specific to digital mediums, development of eco-feedback tools integrated into digital art production environments, and the establishment of collaborative networks among stakeholders to promote resource sharing and sustainable innovation. The findings intend to influence policy formulations within arts organizations and promote broader awareness of environmental responsibility in digital art communities. Further research is suggested in longitudinal studies to evaluate the long-term impacts of implementing sustainable frameworks and exploring emerging digital materials and technologies for their ecological implications. Overall, this study aims to fill the existing gap in scholarly literature regarding sustainability in digital art, providing a robust, adaptable framework that aligns artistic innovation with environmental stewardship.
