Thesis Abstract
The rapid proliferation of digital technology has transformed entrepreneurial activities, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of how digital startups can achieve sustainability through entrepreneurial orientation (EO). Despite the growing interest in EO within digital contexts, there remains a significant gap in understanding how sustainability considerations can be integrated into entrepreneurial attitudes, strategies, and practices specific to digital startups. This study aims to develop a theoretical framework that delineates the key dimensions and antecedents of sustainable entrepreneurial orientation (SEO) in digital startup environments. The specific objectives include identifying core components of SEO, examining the influence of organizational culture and technological capabilities on SEO, and exploring the moderating role of environmental uncertainty on the relationship between entrepreneurial practices and sustainability outcomes. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, beginning with a qualitative exploratory phase involving 20 in-depth interviews with founders and key managers of digital startups operating in the technology hubs of a major metropolitan region, to generate rich, contextual insights into the practices and perceptions of SEO. This qualitative phase guides the development of a structured survey instrument, which is subsequently administered to a larger sample of 150 digital startup firms selected through stratified random sampling. The quantitative data collected through structured questionnaires are analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to validate the measurement model, and structural equation modeling (SEM) is employed to test hypothesized relationships among constructs. Additionally, thematic analysis is conducted on interview transcripts to contextualize and deepen the interpretation of quantitative findings. Key expected findings include the identification of distinct dimensions of SEO specific to digital startups, such as technological innovation orientation, social impact focus, and resource flexibility, and the recognition of organizational culture—particularly entrepreneurial learning and proactiveness—as critical antecedents of SEO. It leverages the Resource-Based View (RBV) theory to emphasize the strategic role of organizational internal resources, and the Dynamic Capabilities theory to explain how digital startups adapt their entrepreneurial practices in response to changing environmental conditions. The findings are expected to provide a nuanced understanding of the multi-dimensional nature of SEO and its implications for strategic management in digital entrepreneurship. This research contributes to academic knowledge by bridging the gap between entrepreneurship theory and sustainability practices within the rapidly evolving digital landscape, offering an empirically validated model for practitioners and policymakers to foster sustainable digital entrepreneurship. The main conclusion emphasizes the necessity for digital startups to embed sustainability in their entrepreneurial orientations through strategic resource allocation, innovation, and adaptive capabilities. Based on the findings, it is recommended that digital entrepreneurs cultivate organizational cultures that promote learning and proactive risk-taking, adopt flexible technological strategies, and incorporate environmental scanning to adapt to uncertainty effectively. Future research directions include longitudinal studies to examine the evolution of SEO over time and cross-cultural validation of the proposed framework to enhance its generalizability across diverse digital ecosystems.
