Thesis Abstract
The adoption of sustainable agroforestry practices among smallholder farmers remains a critical challenge for promoting environmental conservation, socioeconomic resilience, and agricultural productivity in developing regions. Despite the recognized benefits of agroforestry, inconsistent adoption rates highlight the need for a comprehensive framework that elucidates the determinants and processes influencing farmers’ decisions to integrate sustainable practices into their farming systems. This study aims to develop and validate a theoretical framework for understanding and enhancing the adoption of sustainable agroforestry practices by smallholder farmers, with specific objectives to identify key socio-economic, ecological, and institutional factors; examine the influence of farmers’ perceptions and attitudes; and propose actionable strategies for policy and extension services. Employing a mixed-methods research design within a cross-sectional survey and qualitative inquiry, the study targeted a population of 500 smallholder farmers located in the agricultural districts of the Southeastern region. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select a representative sample of 200 farmers, ensuring diversity in farm size, socioeconomic status, and exposure to agroforestry initiatives. Quantitative data were collected through structured questionnaires, validated by content experts and tested for reliability via Cronbach’s alpha (? > 0.8). Qualitative data were obtained through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with key informants, including extension agents and local leaders. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis, and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to assess the relationships among variables and to test the hypothesized pathways within the proposed conceptual framework. The study anticipates revealing that socio-economic factors such as land tenure security, income diversification, and access to credit significantly influence farmers’ willingness and capacity to adopt agroforestry practices. The SEM results are projected to demonstrate the mediating effects of farmers’ perceptions and attitudes, such as environmental consciousness and perceived profitability, on the relationship between external factors and practice adoption. Furthermore, the findings are likely to validate key theoretical components derived from the Theory of Planned Behavior and Diffusion of Innovations, integrated into a novel framework tailored specifically to smallholder agroforestry contexts. The expected contribution of this research is the development of a context-specific, empirically validated framework that delineates the pathways influencing sustainable agroforestry adoption, providing stakeholders with a strategic model to design targeted interventions, extension programs, and policies. By identifying the critical factors and their interrelationships, the study aims to bridge existing gaps in the literature regarding smallholder farmer behavior and sustainable land-use practices. The main conclusion underscores the importance of integrative strategies that combine socio-economic incentives, ecological education, and institutional support to foster sustainable adoption. Recommendations include strengthening land tenure security, enhancing access to credit and technical training, and promoting participatory extension models that leverage local knowledge and perceptions. The study advocates for policymakers and development agencies to adopt a holistic approach rooted in the validated framework to effectively promote sustainable agroforestry practices among smallholder farmers, thereby contributing to broader sustainable agricultural development goals.
