Thesis Abstract

Smallholder coffee producers in Costa Rica operate within a vertically integrated value chain dominated by cooperative governance, market volatility, and climate-related production risks, yet there is limited understanding of the domestically rooted determinants that shape profitability at the farm level. This study addresses the problem of declining or variable profitability among smallholder coffee farmers and the role of cooperative structures in mediating economic outcomes, with particular attention to price transmission, input efficiency, access to finance, and risk management. The aim is to identify and quantify the determinants of profitability among smallholders affiliated with Costa Rican coffee cooperatives and to assess how cooperative attributes influence farm-level economic performance. The specific objectives are (1) to estimate the profitability of smallholder coffee farms using gross margin and return on assets as primary indicators; (2) to examine the influence of input use efficiency, yield, farm size, and management practices on profitability; (3) to evaluate the impact of cooperative governance features (participation in pricing committees, access to credit, extension services, and collective marketing) on farm profitability; (4) to analyze price transmission dynamics and exposure to international market volatility using time-series data; and (5) to develop a pragmatic model integrating socio-economic, technical, and institutional determinants to predict profitability under varying climate and market scenarios. A mixed-methods design is adopted, combining a quantitative cross-sectional survey of 420 smallholder producers across five Costa Rican cooperatives with qualitative in-depth interviews of 30 cooperative managers and seasoned farmers to contextualize findings. Primary data are collected through structured questionnaires designed to capture farm-level inputs, outputs, costs, yields, and cooperative services, while secondary data comprise cooperative financial statements, regional weather records, and national price series. Validity and reliability are ensured through instrument pre-testing, Cronbach’s alpha checks for multi-item scales, and triangulation with documentary evidence. Quantitative analysis employs multivariate regression to identify determinants of profitability, with robustness testing via variance inflation factors and alternative specifications; a Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) is used to decompose technical and allocative efficiency. A difference-in-differences approach is employed to trace the impact of cooperative governance interventions where longitudinal data permit, complemented by propensity score matching to control for selection bias. The theoretical framework draws on transaction cost economics, resource-based view, and institutional theory to interpret how cooperative structures and capabilities influence profitability, with the conceptual model guiding interpretation of direct and indirect effects. Expected findings indicate that yield variability, input efficiency (especially fertilizer-use efficiency), access to credit, and the intensity of cooperative services significantly predict profitability, while exposure to price and climate risk interacts with governance mechanisms to modulate farm performance. It is anticipated that cooperative governance attributes such as transparent pricing mechanisms, collective access to credit, extended extension services, and risk-sharing arrangements will positively correlate with higher profitability by reducing transaction costs and improving bargaining power. The study contributes to knowledge by bridging agribusiness economics and cooperative governance literature through an empirically grounded model of profitability determinants for smallholders in a high-value commodity chain, offering a contextually grounded framework for policy and practice. Policy and managerial implications center on strengthening cooperative finance and risk management tools, scaling targeted extension and technical assistance, promoting efficient input use, and integrating climate-smart practices to stabilize profitability. The main conclusion posits that profitability among Costa Rican smallholder coffee farmers is driven by a combination of technical efficiency, market access facilitated by cooperative governance, and resilience to price and climate risks, with the strongest effects arising from cooperative credit access, extension services, and input-use efficiency. Recommendations include enhancing cooperative capacity-building programs, expanding access to affordable credit with performance-based covenants, investing in precision agronomy and climate adaptation training, and improving data-sharing platforms for transparent price and yield information to empower smallholders in bargaining and risk management.
