Thesis Abstract

Smallholder mango production in Kenya faces productivity and market access constraints, compounded by variable extension delivery and limited farmer leadership within producer groups. The study investigates the effectiveness of farmer education interventions deployed by the Mango Producers Cooperative Union (MPCU) to enhance technical competencies, agribusiness practices, and collective bargaining capacity among member farmers. Despite substantial investment in training programs, there is limited evidence on how education interventions translate into on-farm productivity, post-harvest handling, quality compliance, and market performance. The problem addressed is the gap between training provision and measurable farmer outcomes within a real-world cooperative context, which hinders scalable policy and management recommendations. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of MPCU’s farmer education interventions and identify determinants of successful knowledge transfer and practice change. Specific objectives are (1) to assess changes in technical knowledge and farming practices (soil and water management, integrated pest management, post-harvest handling) among MPCU members before and after training; (2) to evaluate shifts in productivity, fruit quality, and post-harvest losses associated with education interventions; (3) to examine changes in farmers’ market engagement, bargaining power, and income attributable to upgraded agribusiness and organizational leadership training; (4) to identify moderating factors (gender, age, farming scale, access to inputs, trust in extension agents) influencing the effectiveness of education interventions; and (5) to propose a model of learning pathways linking education interventions to measurable outcomes within a cooperative setting. The methodology adopts an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. The population comprises all active MPCU member farmers in the Nyeri and Embu counties, with a sampling frame of 8 400 members. A stratified random sample of 520 farmers is selected for quantitative data collection, complemented by 30 focus group discussions (FGDs) and 20 in-depth interviews (IDIs) with senior extension staff, cooperative officials, and trainer-facilitator teams. A pre-test/post-test approach with a quasi-experimental control group is employed to gauge changes in knowledge and practices, using a structured questionnaire and observation checklists administered at baseline and 12 months post-intervention. Data collection instruments include a validated Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) survey, farm productivity records, quality parameter logs (size uniformity, sugar content, moisture), cold-chain and post-harvest loss metrics, and market performance indicators. Validity and reliability are ensured through content validation by subject-matter experts, pilot testing (n=40), Cronbach’s alpha assessment for internal consistency (target ? ? 0.7), and inter-rater reliability for observational measures (Cohen’s kappa ? 0.75). Quantitative data are analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and difference-in-differences (DiD) with multivariate regression to isolate intervention effects while controlling for covariates. A structural equation model will test hypothesized pathways from education interventions to knowledge gains, practice adoption, productivity, quality, and income. Qualitative data from FGDs and IDIs are transcribed, coded using thematic analysis, and integrated through a parallel-triangulation to elucidate contextual factors, perceived benefits, and barriers. Theoretical framing draws on the Diffusion of Innovations (Rogers) to illuminate adoption dynamics, and the Social Cognitive Theory to explain self-efficacy and outcome expectations shaping farmer behavior. Expected findings include statistically significant improvements in agronomic knowledge, higher adoption rates of climate-smart practices, reductions in post-harvest losses, and modest gains in productivity and fruit quality among educated farmers compared with controls. It is anticipated that education interventions will also correlate with improved cooperative engagement, enhanced bargaining capacity, and incremental increases in member income, moderated by gender, access to inputs, and trust in extension services. The study will contribute to knowledge by providing empirical evidence on how structured farmer education within a cooperative context translates into agronomic, economic, and organizational outcomes, and by offering a theoretically grounded learning-pathway model that can guide replication in similar value-chain organizations. The main conclusion is that targeted, contextually tailored farmer education interventions embedded within MPCU’s governance and extension architecture can produce measurable improvements in technical competencies, productivity, and market performance. Recommendations include refining training curricula to emphasize post-harvest competence and market-oriented skills, strengthening gender-responsive extension delivery, integrating farmer facilitators within MPCU’s leadership development track, and adopting continuous monitoring using the DiD framework to enable timely policy adjustments and scale-up decisions.

It will also examine outcomes such as yield, fruit quality, and sales efficiency. A mixed-methods design will be used: quantitative data from a survey of 300 farmers and administrative records (yields, grade quality, and market prices) and qualitative data from interviews with 25 extension staff and 15 cooperative leaders. Data will be analyzed using regression analyses to test associations between participation in interventions and outcomes, and thematic analysis for interview transcripts to identify enablers and barriers to effective learning. Expected contribution and outcomes: The study will identify which educational modalities and content yield the strongest improvements, clarify the role of cooperative governance in facilitating learning, and offer practical recommendations for scaling effective interventions across similar farmer organizations. It is expected to find that interactive, hands-on demonstrations combined with ongoing mentorship and timely information significantly improve adoption of best practices and market-oriented behaviors, with variation by farmer age, education level, and farm size. Recommendations will target program design, delivery channels, and monitoring and evaluation frameworks for farmer education in commodity-specific cooperatives.
