Thesis Abstract
Advisory extension interventions are central to improving productivity, sustainability, and livelihoods among smallholder tea farmers in Kenya, yet the effectiveness and mechanisms of advisory networks within the Kenyan Tea Smallholder Network (KTSN) remain inadequately understood. This study addresses the gap by examining how advisory extension services influence technical efficiency, adoption of sustainable practices, and market access among tea smallholders, and by identifying the organizational and social factors that shape extension outcomes. The aim is to quantify the impact of advisory extension on smallholder performance and to elucidate the pathways through which information is translated into practice. Specific objectives are (i) to assess the level of adoption of recommended farming practices and inputs disseminated through KTSN advisory channels; (ii) to evaluate the relationship between advisory exposure and technical efficiency using stochastic frontier analysis; (iii) to examine farmers’ perceptions of extension credibility, trust, and timeliness as mediators of adoption using structural equation modelling; (iv) to identify institutional and inter-organizational factors within KTSN that constrain or enhance extension effectiveness; and (v) to generate actionable recommendations for policy and practice to strengthen advisory networks. A cross-sectional multi-stage survey will be conducted in Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and Murang’a counties, drawing a sample of 600 smallholder farmers affiliated with the KTSN. The data collection will combine structured questionnaires, in-depth interviews with 60 extension agents, 20 focus group discussions, and key informant interviews with 12 managers from tea companies and cooperative unions. Instrument validity will be established through expert review and pilot testing, with reliability assessed via Cronbach’s alpha and composite reliability for latent constructs. Quantitative data will be analyzed using stochastic frontier analysis to estimate technical efficiency scores and multivariate regression to examine determinants of efficiency and practice adoption. Structural equation modelling (AMOS or Mplus) will test the hypothesized mediation effects of perceived extension credibility, trust, and timeliness. Qualitative data from interviews and discussions will be analyzed using thematic analysis to triangulate and contextualize quantitative results. A mixed-methods approach will integrate findings to provide a holistic understanding of advisory extension effectiveness within the KTSN. Expected findings include (i) a positive association between higher exposure to structured advisory visits and the adoption of recommended pruning, fertilizer regimes, and integrated pest management, with corresponding improvements in technical efficiency; (ii) significant mediation effects of perceived credibility and timeliness on the adoption-intention to practice relationship; (iii) evidence that inter-organizational collaboration, extension workload, and information-sharing platforms within KTSN influence both the reach and quality of advisory services; (iv) regional variations in extension outcomes linked to farmer literacy, socio-economic status, and farm size; and (v) identification of bottlenecks such as delayed information flow, inconsistent messaging, and limited feedback mechanisms. The study contributes to knowledge by integrating theories of diffusions of innovations, social capital, and extension communication within a rigorous empirical framework to illuminate how advisory extension operates in a large-scale, African, commodity-specific smallholder system. Practically, the findings will inform policy revisions for extension budgeting, capacity building of extension agents, and the design of farmer-centric communication tools and feedback loops, with specific recommendations for enhancing message credibility, timeliness, and embeddedness within farmer networks. The conclusion will emphasize strengthening formal–informal linkages among growers, cooperatives, and tea buyers, improving incentive structures for extension staff, and investing in data-driven decision support systems. Recommendations will target the Kenya Tea Development Agency, cooperative unions, and ministry-level agricultural extension governance to optimize advisory extension effectiveness and farmer outcomes in the Kenyan tea sector.
