Developing a Holistic Framework for Disease Prevention in Small Animal Veterinary Practice

Thesis Abstract

In small animal veterinary practice, the rising incidence of preventable diseases poses significant challenges to animal health, owner compliance, and operational efficiency, underscoring the need for a comprehensive, systemic approach to disease prevention. This study aims to develop a holistic framework that integrates diagnostic, behavioral, environmental, and educational strategies to enhance preventive health measures within small animal veterinary settings. Specifically, the research seeks to identify critical determinants of successful disease prevention, formulate an operational model that captures interrelated preventative best practices, and evaluate the framework’s efficacy in real-world veterinary clinics. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study first adopts a qualitative approach through thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted with fifty veterinary practitioners, pet owners, and veterinary public health officials across urban and peri-urban regions. The qualitative insights inform the development of a quantitative survey instrument, which is validated through pilot testing and expert reviews. In the subsequent quantitative phase, a sample of 200 veterinary clinics is selected via stratified random sampling, and data is collected through structured questionnaires administered to veterinary clinicians and accompanied by observational checklists during routine consultations. Data analysis involves descriptive statistics to profile current preventive practices, followed by multiple regression analysis to determine predictors of effective disease prevention. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is utilized to validate the hypothesized relationships among core components of the proposed holistic framework, informed by relevant theoretical models such as the Health Belief Model and the Ecological Systems Theory. The study anticipates identifying key variables—such as client education levels, staff training intensity, environmental sanitation, and communication strategies—that significantly enhance preventive outcomes. It is expected that the findings will reveal substantial gaps in existing practices, particularly regarding integration of behavioral and environmental factors, which the proposed framework aims to address comprehensively. The expected contribution of this research is the development of a validated, scalable holistic framework that equips veterinary professionals with a structured paradigm to systematically improve disease prevention efforts. By operationalizing multidimensional factors—ranging from owner compliance and staff capacity to environmental controls—the framework aims to influence policy development, clinical protocols, and client engagement strategies. The main conclusion is that adopting an integrated, systems-based approach considerably improves disease prevention in small animal practice, leading to enhanced animal welfare, reduced treatment costs, and increased operational efficiency. Based on these findings, the study recommends targeted training programs for veterinary staff, the implementation of standardized client education modules, and routine environmental assessments as core components of practice management. It further suggests avenues for future research, including longitudinal evaluations of framework implementation and adaptation to diverse practice contexts, to reinforce the sustainability and broader applicability of the model.
