A Framework for Analyzing Ideological Bias in Political Discourse

Thesis Abstract

In contemporary political discourse, ideological bias significantly influences public perception and policy formulation, yet there remains a lack of comprehensive analytical frameworks capable of systematically identifying, categorizing, and measuring such biases across diverse communicative contexts. This study aims to develop an integrated analytical framework that elucidates the mechanisms and patterns underlying ideological bias in political discourse, facilitating more accurate recognition and critical assessment of bias across various media and political figures. The specific objectives include examining linguistic features associated with bias, conceptualizing a multi-dimensional bias typology, and validating the framework through empirical analysis of political speeches and media reports. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines qualitative content analysis with quantitative statistical techniques to ensure robust investigation. The qualitative phase involves thematic analysis of 150 political speeches and 200 media articles sourced from national print, broadcast, and online platforms over a twelve-month period. Content analysis is guided by criteria derived from critical discourse analysis (CDA) theories, notably van Dijk’s ideological square and Fairclough’s model of discourse-as-social practice, to identify linguistic markers indicative of bias, such as lexical choices, framing devices, and syntactic structures. The quantitative phase utilizes regression analysis and factor analysis on coded data to determine the strength and interrelations of identified bias indicators, examining 50 political communicators across different ideological spectrums. The anticipated findings include a typology of ideological bias manifesting in specific linguistic patterns, along with a validated model that maps these patterns in relation to political orientation, contextual variables, and discourse functions. The framework is expected to reveal how bias reinforces ideological positioning and influences audience perception, thereby contributing to a nuanced understanding of the discourse strategies employed by political actors and media outlets. The study further posits that certain linguistic markers are consistently associated with specific ideological inclinations, enabling more precise detection of bias in political communication. This research makes a significant contribution to the existing body of knowledge by integrating insights from critical discourse analysis, psycholinguistics, and communication theory into a coherent analytical framework tailored for bias detection. It advances methodological rigor in studying ideological bias, providing both a conceptual model and practical tools for scholars, analysts, and educators engaged in media literacy, political communication, and discourse analysis. The framework's applicability extends to policy advocacy, journalistic training, and digital media regulation. The main conclusion emphasizes that linguistic features serve as reliable indicators of ideological bias, and that a systematic, multi-layered analytical approach enhances understanding of bias mechanisms. Recommendations include integrating the framework into media literacy programs, training journalists to recognize and mitigate bias, and further refining the model through longitudinal studies and cross-cultural validation. Overall, the study advocates for a more critical and evidence-based engagement with political discourse, aiming to promote transparency and accountability in public communication.
