Thesis Abstract
Childhood obesity has emerged as a critical public health challenge in urban environments, driven by factors such as poor dietary habits, sedentary lifestyles, and limited nutritional awareness among children and their caregivers. Despite increasing awareness programs, the prevalence of childhood obesity remains alarmingly high in urban schools, suggesting a need to evaluate the effectiveness of targeted nutritional education interventions. This study aims to assess the impact of a structured nutritional education program on childhood obesity prevention in urban schools, with specific objectives to evaluate changes in students' nutritional knowledge, dietary behaviors, and body mass index (BMI) following the intervention, as well as to identify factors influencing the effectiveness of such programs. The overarching goal is to establish evidence-based insights to inform policy and practice in school-based health promotion. The research adopts a quantitative quasi-experimental design with a control group, involving a total sample of 600 students aged 8 to 12 years from six urban public primary schools. Participants will be selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representation across socioeconomic strata. The intervention group (n=300) will undergo a 12-week nutritional education program based on the Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura) and the Health Belief Model, emphasizing knowledge acquisition, behavioral skills, and motivation. Data collection will employ validated questionnaires to measure nutritional knowledge and dietary practices, along with physical assessments to record anthropometric indices such as height, weight, and BMI at baseline, immediately post-intervention, and three months thereafter. Data analysis will include descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), and multiple regression analyses to evaluate the intervention's effects on outcome variables while controlling for confounders. It is anticipated that the nutritional education intervention will lead to statistically significant improvements in students' nutritional knowledge, healthier dietary behaviors, and reductions in BMI compared to the control group. The expected findings will provide empirical evidence that school-based nutritional education can serve as an effective strategy for childhood obesity prevention in urban settings. Furthermore, the study will identify key determinants influencing intervention adherence and effectiveness, such as parental involvement and socio-economic status. This research contributes novel insights to the existing literature by quantitatively establishing causal links between targeted nutritional education and obesity-related outcomes among urban schoolchildren, addressing a significant gap concerning the sustainability and scalability of such interventions in resource-limited settings. The study also suggests the need for longitudinal research to assess long-term sustainability and health outcomes of school-based nutritional interventions, as well as further exploration into culturally tailored strategies to enhance program acceptance and effectiveness across diverse urban populations.

This research looks at how teaching children about healthy eating can help prevent obesity among students in urban schools.
