Assessing the Impact of Mobile Journalism Apps on News Reporting Quality

Thesis Abstract

The rapid proliferation of mobile journalism applications has transformed the landscape of news reporting, enabling journalists and citizen reporters to produce and disseminate news content more efficiently and instantaneously. This study investigates the impact of mobile journalism apps on the quality of news reporting, addressing concerns about accuracy, credibility, timeliness, and ethical considerations amid the increasing reliance on mobile technology in news production. The primary aim is to assess whether mobile journalism apps enhance or undermine the quality metrics of news reports and to identify the key factors influencing their effectiveness. The specific objectives include evaluating perceptions of journalists and news consumers regarding report accuracy and credibility, analyzing the role of mobile journalism tools in improving timeliness, examining the ethical implications arising from mobile-based news production, and exploring the technological and skill-related factors that influence report quality. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. The target population comprises 300 professional journalists and 200 news consumers from metropolitan areas within the country, selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representativeness. Quantitative data are collected using structured questionnaires validated for reliability through Cronbach’s alpha, while qualitative data are obtained via semi-structured interviews with 30 journalists and 20 media experts, purposively selected based on their extensive use of mobile journalism apps. Data analysis involves descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis to examine determinants of report quality, and thematic analysis for interview transcripts, all facilitated by SPSS and NVivo software. The study anticipates findings that demonstrate a significant positive correlation between the use of mobile journalism apps and improvements in report timeliness and accessibility. However, it is expected that challenges relating to accuracy and ethical standards may persist or even be exacerbated without adequate training and adherence to journalistic norms. The analysis is guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), to evaluate users’ acceptance and perceived ease of use, and the Ethical Decision-Making Framework, to interpret ethical issues associated with mobile reporting. The research also hypothesizes that media literacy and technological proficiency moderate the relationship between app usage and report quality. The findings are expected to contribute to existing literature by providing an empirical assessment of mobile journalism’s influence on news quality, highlighting specific technological and human factors that facilitate or hinder quality assurance. The study advances the theoretical understanding of mobile journalism’s role through integration of TAM and ethical decision-making theories, offering a nuanced perspective on technological adoption in a journalistic context. The study concludes that mobile journalism apps serve as potent tools for enhancing certain aspects of news reporting, notably timeliness and audience engagement, but require structured training and ethical safeguards to mitigate risks related to misinformation and sensationalism. Recommendations include developing standardized guidelines for mobile journalism practices, incorporating digital literacy and ethics into journalism curricula, and fostering collaborative frameworks between technologists and media practitioners to optimize app functionalities. Finally, suggestions for further research include longitudinal studies to assess evolving practices and the impact of emerging mobile journalism innovations on overall news quality, thereby contributing to the sustainable integration of mobile technology in journalism.
