Thesis Abstract

Physical activity among adolescents is a critical determinant of their physical health, psychological well-being, and social development; however, disparities in activity levels between urban and rural populations remain inadequately explored. This study aims to compare the physical activity levels of adolescents residing in urban and rural settings, identify factors influencing these patterns, and provide evidence-based recommendations to promote active lifestyles across diverse environments. The specific objectives include assessing the frequency, intensity, and types of physical activities undertaken, examining socio-demographic correlates, and exploring environmental and motivational factors impacting activity engagement. Adopting a cross-sectional comparative research design, the study engaged a stratified random sample of 600 adolescents aged 13 to 19 years, equally split between urban and rural areas, drawn from public and private secondary schools within the region. Data collection employed a structured questionnaire comprising the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) for quantitative assessment of physical activity levels, supplemented by focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews to explore contextual factors influencing participation. Validity and reliability of instruments were established through pilot testing with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.75. Ethical approval obtained from the institutional review board, with informed consent secured from participants and guardians. It underscores the importance of contextualized health promotion strategies that consider environmental accessibility, safety, and social support systems in fostering active lifestyles. The main conclusion advocates for integrated urban-rural health promotion programs that leverage community resources, enhance safe recreational spaces, and foster family and peer support networks. Based on the findings, it is recommended that policymakers prioritize infrastructure development in urban areas to promote accessible recreational facilities, while rural programs should emphasize community-based activity initiatives that capitalize on outdoor spaces. Schools should incorporate comprehensive physical education curricula emphasizing both structured and unstructured activities, with increased community engagement. Future research should longitudinally examine behavioral changes over time and explore intervention efficacy across different ecological contexts, ensuring sustainable promotion of physical activity among adolescents in diverse environments.
