Thesis Abstract

In an era of increasing awareness of workplace health promotion, this study investigates the influence of corporate wellness programs on employees' dietary behaviors within a leading technology firm employing approximately 2,500 staff members. Despite significant investments in wellness initiatives, there remains limited empirical evidence on their effectiveness in improving nutritional practices among employees in the tech industry. This research aims to evaluate the extent to which participation in a comprehensive corporate wellness program impacts dietary choices and habits, with specific objectives to assess changes in fruit and vegetable intake, reduction in processed food consumption, and improvements in overall nutritional awareness over a 12-month period. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative data analysis with qualitative insights to comprehensively examine behavioral changes. The quantitative component involves a longitudinal survey administered to a stratified random sample of 350 employees, representing approximately 14% of the workforce, to capture baseline and follow-up dietary behaviors post-intervention. Data collection instruments include a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) aligned with national dietary guidelines and a self-administered questionnaire measuring nutritional knowledge, motivation, and perceived barriers. The qualitative component comprises focus group discussions with 30 employees across departments to explore contextual factors influencing dietary choices, analyzed through thematic analysis. The quantitative data are subjected to descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and multiple regression analysis to identify significant predictors of dietary change, while thematic analysis provides contextual understanding of motivators and barriers. The study is grounded in Social Cognitive Theory, emphasizing observational learning and self-efficacy, and Self-Determination Theory, highlighting intrinsic motivation, to interpret behavioral modifications resulting from the wellness program. Anticipated findings include statistically significant increases in fruit and vegetable consumption, a decrease in processed food intake, and enhanced nutritional knowledge among participants who actively engaged with program components such as nutritional counseling, healthy meal provision, and educational workshops. Regression analyses are expected to reveal that higher baseline motivation and greater self-efficacy significantly predict positive dietary changes. Qualitative analysis is projected to uncover organizational, social, and individual factors influencing adherence to healthier eating behaviors. This research will contribute novel insights into the effectiveness of corporate wellness initiatives within high-tech environments, filling a critical gap in the literature on workplace nutrition interventions. It will elucidate the behavioral mechanisms underpinning dietary modifications prompted by structured wellness programs and provide evidence-based recommendations for designing more impactful nutrition-focused interventions. The study’s findings can inform organizational policies aimed at fostering healthier eating habits, reducing diet-related health risks, and improving overall employee well-being, thus contributing both to scholarly knowledge and practical applications in occupational health promotion. The main conclusion emphasizes that well-structured wellness programs can serve as effective catalysts for positive dietary behavior change among employees when based on theoretical models supporting behavioral science. It recommends that organizations adopt integrated, theory-driven approaches emphasizing nutritional education, personalized counseling, and supportive organizational culture to enhance dietary health outcomes. Further research is suggested to explore long-term sustainability of such behavioral changes and their impact on overall health indicators.

Thesis Overview

This research investigates how corporate wellness programs influence the dietary behaviors of employees at a technology company. Many companies introduce wellness programs to promote healthier lifestyles among employees, aiming to improve health and increase productivity. However, there is limited detailed understanding of how these programs specifically impact what employees eat and how their eating habits change over time. This gap in knowledge makes it difficult for organizations to design effective strategies tailored to promoting healthier dietary choices. The study aims to assess whether participation in wellness programs is associated with positive changes in employees’ eating behaviors. The main objectives include identifying the types of dietary changes experienced by employees, understanding the factors that motivate or hinder healthy eating within the program, and determining the overall impact of the program on dietary habits. The research will be conducted through a quantitative approach, using a cross-sectional survey of 300 employees randomly selected from the tech company. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires that measure dietary behaviors before and after participation in the wellness program, along with variables such as demographic factors, health motivation, and program engagement levels. The data will be analyzed using statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics to summarize behaviors, paired t-tests to compare pre- and post-intervention dietary habits, and regression analysis to identify significant predictors of positive dietary change. The expected contribution of this study is a clearer understanding of the effectiveness of corporate wellness initiatives in improving diet quality among employees. It aims to provide evidence-based insights that can help organizations tailor their programs more effectively. The anticipated outcome is that increased participation and engagement with wellness programs will be associated with healthier dietary behaviors, leading to recommendations for best practices in corporate health promotion. The findings are expected to inform future program design, helping companies develop more impactful strategies for fostering healthier eating habits in the workplace, ultimately contributing to improved employee health and well-being.
