Thesis Abstract
The rapid proliferation of digital technologies has underscored the critical need for enhancing digital literacy among community members, particularly in underserved and peri-urban areas where access and skills gaps persist. Despite the recognition of digital literacy as a fundamental competency for participation in modern socio-economic activities, limited empirical evidence exists concerning the effective design, implementation, and evaluation of community-driven digital literacy initiatives. This study aims to develop, implement, and assess the efficacy of a community-based digital literacy program tailored to the needs of adults in peri-urban regions, with the overarching goal of fostering digital inclusion and socio-economic empowerment. The specific objectives include identifying existing digital literacy challenges faced by community members, designing a culturally relevant and sustainable curriculum grounded in the Diffusion of Innovations theory and the Technology Acceptance Model, implementing the program over a 12-week period with a sample of 250 adult participants selected through stratified random sampling, and evaluating the program’s impact using a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-intervention surveys measuring digital skills, self-efficacy, and technology adoption levels, while qualitative data were obtained via focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with participants and facilitators to capture contextual insights and experiential perceptions. The research adopted a quasi-experimental design complemented by an exploratory qualitative component to facilitate comprehensive understanding. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired sample t-tests to assess changes in digital competence, and multiple regression analysis to identify predictors of technology adoption. Qualitative data were subjected to thematic analysis to elucidate participants’ experiences, perceived barriers, and facilitators to digital engagement.
