Thesis Abstract

The rapid proliferation of digital technologies has transformed agricultural extension services, offering novel avenues to enhance smallholder farmers’ productivity in developing economies. However, the tangible impact of these digital extension platforms remains inadequately documented, particularly in contexts where traditional extension methods still prevail. This study aims to systematically assess the influence of digital extension services on smallholder farmers' agricultural productivity, focusing on maize and vegetable production in the Eastern Region. The specific objectives are to determine the level of digital extension adoption among farmers, evaluate the effect of digital extension on crop yield and income, and identify the factors influencing successful adoption of digital platforms. Employing a descriptive cross-sectional research design, the study targeted smallholder farmers actively engaged in maize and vegetable farming within the region. The population size was estimated at 15,000 farmers, from which a stratified random sampling approach was used to select a sample of 384 farmers, ensuring proportional representation of those with and without access to digital extension services. Data collection instruments included structured questionnaires administered through face-to-face interviews, complemented by focus group discussions and key informant interviews to enrich contextual understanding. The questionnaires captured demographic data, level of digital technology use, access to extension services, crop yields, and income details. Validity of the instruments was secured through expert review, and reliability was established via Cronbach's alpha, which exceeded 0.8. Data were analyzed using multiple analytical techniques. Descriptive statistics summarized socio-demographic characteristics and levels of digital platform usage. Inferential analysis involved multiple regression models to quantify the impact of digital extension on crop yields and household income, controlling for key variables such as education, farm size, and access to credit. Additionally, thematic analysis was applied to qualitative data from focus groups and interviews to contextualize quantitative findings and explore perceived barriers and facilitators to digital extension adoption. Theoretical underpinnings of the study are grounded in the Diffusion of Innovations Theory, illustrating how new technologies are adopted within farming communities, and the Technology Acceptance Model, which explains user acceptance of digital tools. Preliminary expected findings suggest that farmers utilizing digital extension services demonstrate significantly higher crop yields and income levels compared to non-users, with factors such as digital literacy, access to mobile devices, and extension support services positively influencing adoption. The study anticipates identifying key challenges including limited digital skills, unreliable network connectivity, and resistance to change. The findings are anticipated to reveal that digital extension services contribute substantially to increasing productivity and income, primarily through improved access to timely and tailored agricultural information. This research contributes new empirical evidence to the discourse on digital agriculture, specifically demonstrating how digital extension platforms can be integrated into smallholder farming systems to enhance productivity. It advances theoretical understanding by applying and testing the Diffusion of Innovations and Technology Acceptance Models in the context of digital agricultural extension. The study offers practical insights for policymakers, development agencies, and extension service providers seeking to scale digital interventions effectively within smallholder communities. Concluding, the study emphasizes the importance of fostering digital literacy, infrastructure development, and stakeholder collaboration to maximize the benefits of digital extension services. Recommendations include investing in digital infrastructure, designing user-friendly platforms tailored to farmers’ needs, and creating supportive policies to incentivize adoption. Future research should explore longitudinal impacts of digital extension over multiple growing seasons and evaluate the role of emerging technologies such as drones and artificial intelligence in further enhancing smallholder farmers’ productivity.

The researcher will start by reviewing existing literature on digital extension and rural productivity. Then, a survey will be conducted among a representative sample of 300 smallholder farmers who have access to digital extension services, compared with a control group not using such services. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires and interviews, focusing on farmers’ productivity levels, adoption of new practices, and income. Quantitative data will be analyzed using statistical techniques like regression analysis to identify the relationship between digital service use and productivity. The study will also include thematic analysis of qualitative responses to understand farmers’ experiences. The expected outcome is to establish whether digital extension services significantly improve smallholder farmers’ productivity and to identify factors that enhance or limit their effectiveness. The study’s contribution lies in providing evidence-based insights into how digital tools can be harnessed for agricultural development. It is expected to recommend best practices for expanding digital extension and suggest strategies to maximize its benefits, ultimately supporting sustainable farming and rural livelihoods.
