Thesis Abstract

In an era where digital competence is integral to educational and socio-economic advancement, disparities in digital literacy between urban and rural student populations remain a significant concern for policymakers and educators. This study investigates the extent and nature of digital literacy skills among students in urban and rural settings, aiming to identify key gaps and factors influencing digital competence. The research is motivated by the persistent digital divide, which hampers equitable access to educational opportunities and technological advancement. The primary objectives of this study are to compare the levels of digital literacy skills between urban and rural students, determine the socio-demographic factors associated with digital literacy, and explore the influence of access to technology, digital training, and socio-economic status on these skills. To achieve these objectives, the study employs a comparative cross-sectional research design, facilitating direct analysis of differences between the two groups at a single point in time. The population comprises secondary school students enrolled in government and private schools within a metropolitan area and its surrounding rural localities. A stratified random sampling technique is used to select a total sample of 400 students, with 200 from urban schools and 200 from rural schools, ensuring proportional representation by gender, socio-economic status, and school type. Data collection instruments include a standardized digital literacy assessment tool developed based on the OECD's Digital Literacy Framework and structured questionnaires to capture demographic, socio-economic, and access-related data. The digital literacy assessment evaluates competencies such as information retrieval, digital communication, content creation, and ethical use of technology. Validity and reliability of the assessment tool are established through expert review and pilot testing, yielding a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.87, indicative of acceptable internal consistency. Data are analyzed using descriptive statistics to profile digital literacy levels, followed by inferential statistics including Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to compare mean scores between groups, and multiple regression analysis to identify predictors of digital literacy levels. The study also employs thematic content analysis to analyze qualitative responses related to students’ perceptions and experiences with digital technology. Expected findings indicate significant disparities, with urban students demonstrating higher digital literacy scores than their rural counterparts. Factors such as access to high-speed internet, possession of personal digital devices, and participation in digital training programs are anticipated to significantly influence digital competence. Institutional support and socio-economic status are expected to emerge as critical determinants of digital literacy levels. The study hypothesizes that urban-rural differences are mediated by access and exposure to digital resources, aligning with the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework and Digital Divide theory. This research contributes to knowledge by providing empirical evidence of digital literacy disparities within a developing country context, offering insights into the socio-economic and infrastructural factors that sustain these gaps. It advances the understanding of how digital literacy development varies across different community settings and informs targeted interventions. The main conclusion underscores the need for comprehensive policy measures to bridge the digital divide, including investments in infrastructure, digital skills training for rural students, and the integration of digital literacy into national curricula. Recommendations include implementing community-based digital literacy programs, expanding internet access in rural areas, and conducting further longitudinal studies to assess the impact of intervention strategies on digital competency development over time. Overall, this study emphasizes that closing the digital literacy gap is essential for fostering equitable educational opportunities and socio-economic mobility in a rapidly digitalizing world.
