Urban public transportation systems play a critical role in promoting sustainable urban development by reducing congestion, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing mobility equity. However, the extent to which transit agencies—specifically Metro Transit—implement and achieve sustainable practices remains underexplored, particularly in the context of increasing urbanization pressures and environmental challenges. This study aims to assess the sustainability practices adopted by Metro Transit, focusing on environmental, social, and economic dimensions, and to identify factors influencing their effectiveness. The specific objectives are to evaluate the environmental initiatives undertaken by Metro Transit, analyze their social inclusiveness and accessibility measures, assess economic viability and funding mechanisms, and propose an integrated framework for enhancing sustainability performance. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative survey data with qualitative interview insights to provide a comprehensive understanding of sustainability practices. The population comprises Metro Transit employees, policy-makers, and commuters, with a sample of 350 respondents selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representativeness across operational, managerial, and user groups. The study concludes that while Metro Transit demonstrates a commendable commitment to environmental initiatives, significant improvements are required in social inclusiveness and economic resilience to achieve comprehensive sustainability. Recommendations include adopting integrated sustainability metrics, enhancing stakeholder engagement, diversifying funding sources, and expanding investment in accessible infrastructure. Additionally, the study advocates for periodic sustainability audits and capacity-building programs to embed sustainability into the organizational culture. Future research should explore longitudinal impacts of sustainability interventions and comparative analyses across different urban transit systems to refine best practices in sustainable urban mobility planning.
