Thesis Abstract

The adoption of sustainable agricultural practices remains a critical challenge in optimizing food production while preserving environmental integrity, particularly among smallholder farmers who are often resistant to change due to socio-economic, knowledge, and perception barriers. This study aims to develop a comprehensive model to enhance farmers' adoption of sustainable agricultural practices by integrating behavioral, institutional, and socio-economic factors. The specific objectives include identifying key determinants influencing adoption rates, examining the relative significance of these factors, and constructing a predictive model capable of guiding extension interventions. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to capture the multifaceted nature of farmer decision-making processes. The research population encompasses 500 smallholder farmers engaged in crop production within the Central Agricultural Zone, selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representativeness across different farm sizes, educational levels, and access to extension services. Quantitative data were collected via structured questionnaires validated through expert review and a pilot study, with reliability confirmed through Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.85. Qualitative insights were obtained through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with 30 extension agents and farmers to explore underlying perceptions and contextual factors. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics to profile the sample, followed by inferential techniques such as multiple regression analysis to identify predictors of adoption behavior, structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the relationships among latent variables, and thematic analysis for qualitative data to contextualize quantitative findings. The theoretical framework underpinning the model draws upon the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen,1991) to explain behavioral intentions, and the Diffusion of Innovations Theory (Rogers, 2003) to understand the dissemination and acceptance of sustainable practices. Expected findings suggest that variables such as perceived environmental benefits, social norms, extension service quality, access to credit, and farmers' education levels significantly influence adoption decisions. The SEM results are anticipated to reveal strong pathways between these factors and behavioral intentions, validating the proposed integrated model. The qualitative data are expected to illuminate contextual nuances, including cultural beliefs and community structures, that shape farmers' perceptions and responsiveness to extension interventions. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by presenting an empirically validated, context-specific model that encapsulates the socio-psychological, institutional, and economic determinants of sustainable practice adoption. It addresses existing gaps by integrating behavioral theories with practical extension components, offering a comprehensive framework for designing targeted extension activities and policy interventions. The study concludes that a multidimensional approach, emphasizing both individual and institutional factors, is essential to enhance adoption rates effectively. It recommends strengthening extension service delivery through capacity building, fostering community-led farmer groups, improving access to credit facilities, and developing culturally sensitive communication strategies. Further research is suggested to test the model across different agro-ecological zones and to evaluate the long-term impact of tailored extension interventions based on the model's predictions. The findings aim to provide policymakers, extension agents, and development practitioners with actionable insights to promote sustainable agriculture, reduce environmental degradation, and improve rural livelihoods.
