Thesis Abstract

Small-scale organic farming cooperatives in rural regions are increasingly recognized as vital catalysts for sustainable rural development and agricultural entrepreneurship, yet they confront numerous challenges related to market access, resource limitations, and capacity for innovation. This study seeks to explore the innovative entrepreneurship strategies employed by these cooperatives to enhance their operational resilience, market competitiveness, and overall sustainability. The primary aim is to identify the specific entrepreneurial tactics and innovative practices that enable small-scale organic farmers to overcome common barriers, foster cooperative growth, and contribute to local economic development. The study is driven by the objectives to (1) examine the current entrepreneurial approaches within organic farming cooperatives, (2) assess the role of innovation in improving productivity and market reach, (3) identify factors facilitating or hindering the adoption of innovative strategies, and (4) develop a conceptual framework linking innovation, entrepreneurship, and cooperative success. The research adopts a mixed-methods design, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative case studies to yield comprehensive insights. The population comprises 15 registered small-scale organic farming cooperatives in a specific rural region known for organic cultivation, with a total membership of approximately 450 farmers. A stratified random sampling technique is used to select 150 cooperative members for the survey, complemented by in-depth interviews with 20 cooperative leaders and key stakeholders. Data collection instruments include structured questionnaires adapted from validated entrepreneurship and innovation scales, and semi-structured interview guides. To ensure validity and reliability, the questionnaire is subjected to pilot testing and Cronbach’s alpha analysis, with reliability coefficients exceeding 0. Eighty-five percent of the total sampling units participate, ensuring representativeness. Quantitative data are analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression to determine relationships between innovation variables and cooperative performance outcomes. For qualitative data, thematic analysis guided by Braun and Clarke’s approach is employed to interpret interview transcripts, identify emergent themes, and elucidate contextual factors influencing innovation adoption. The study also applies the Diffusion of Innovation theory (Everett Rogers) and the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem framework to interpret findings within established theoretical contexts. Expected findings suggest that innovative entrepreneurial strategies—such as digital marketing, value-added processing, and participatory innovation models—significantly correlate with increased sales, expanded market access, and improved sustainability of cooperatives. Factors influencing strategy adoption include access to extension services, peer networks, financial resources, and policy support, while barriers include limited technical skills and market volatility. The research anticipates revealing a nuanced understanding of how cooperatives leverage social capital and technological innovations to foster entrepreneurship in resource-constrained settings. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing a detailed empirical investigation into the specific strategies that promote sustainable entrepreneurship in small-scale organic farming contexts. It extends the theoretical application of Rogers’ diffusion theory and ecosystem models to the agricultural cooperative sector, offering an integrated framework for practitioners and policymakers aiming to enhance rural entrepreneurship through targeted innovation support. The main conclusion underscores the critical role of tailored innovation strategies in transforming cooperative operations and securing market position. The study recommends policy measures focused on capacity building, enhancing digital infrastructure, and fostering innovation networks. Furthermore, it suggests avenues for future research to explore longitudinal impacts of entrepreneurial innovations and their scalability across different rural settings. These findings serve as a strategic guide for stakeholders seeking to strengthen small-scale organic farming cooperatives and advance sustainable rural development through innovative entrepreneurship.

Thesis Overview

This research focuses on exploring how small groups of organic farmers in rural areas are developing and using new business strategies to improve their farms' success and sustainability. These small-scale farmers often face challenges such as limited market access, low product prices, and competition from larger producers. The study aims to identify and understand the innovative strategies these farmers and their cooperatives are adopting to overcome these issues and grow their businesses. The importance of this research lies in its potential to provide practical knowledge and recommendations for farmers, cooperatives, and policy-makers. Despite the growing demand for organic produce, there is limited understanding of the specific entrepreneurial approaches that effectively support small-scale organic farming in rural contexts. The study will address this knowledge gap by systematically examining the strategies used, how they are implemented, and their outcomes. The researcher will begin by reviewing existing literature on entrepreneurship in organic farming, focusing on innovative approaches and cooperative models. Then, they will select a sample of small-scale organic farming cooperatives through purposive sampling—likely around 10 to 15 cooperatives in different rural regions. Data will be collected using semi-structured interviews with farmers, focus groups, and field observations. This qualitative data will help uncover specific strategies and practices. Data analysis will involve thematic analysis to identify common patterns and insights across different cooperatives. The researcher may also use descriptive statistics on any quantitative data collected, such as sales growth or market access metrics. The expected contribution of this study is to generate a deeper understanding of effective entrepreneurial strategies for small organic farmers, which can inform future policy and support programs. The study anticipates that innovative practices centered around marketing, collaboration, and diversification are key to success. Overall, the main outcome will be practical recommendations for farmers and stakeholders to foster sustainable, profitable organic farming cooperatives in rural areas.
