Urban retail districts significantly contribute to economic development but are also primary generators of solid waste, posing substantial environmental challenges. The increasing volume of waste, coupled with inadequate management practices, exacerbates pollution, health risks, and urban decay, thereby necessitating comprehensive evaluations of sustainable waste management strategies tailored for retail environments. This study aims to critically assess the effectiveness of current waste management practices within urban retail districts and identify factors influencing their sustainability. The specific objectives include (1) analyzing existing waste management practices employed by retail outlets; (2) evaluating residents’ and stakeholders’ perceptions of waste management efficacy; (3) identifying barriers to implementing sustainable waste practices; and (4) proposing an integrated framework for enhancing sustainability in retail waste management. The research adopts a mixed-methods design, integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches to ensure a holistic understanding. The study population comprises retail vendors, consumers, municipal waste officials, and environmental managers operating within the Central Business District of a metropolitan city. A stratified random sampling technique is employed to select 350 retail vendors and 400 consumers for surveys, ensuring representation across different retail types and demographic segments. Additionally, purposive sampling targets 20 key informants among municipal officials and environmental experts for in-depth interviews. Data collection instruments include structured questionnaires, semi-structured interview guides, and direct waste audit observations. The questionnaires are validated through pilot testing and assessed for reliability using Cronbach’s alpha, aiming for a coefficient of at least 0.8. Data analysis employs descriptive statistics to summarize survey responses, while inferential techniques such as multiple regression analysis identify determinants of sustainable practices. Thematic analysis is applied to qualitative interview transcripts, and waste audit data are analyzed via chi-square tests to examine the correlation between waste categories and disposal practices. Expected findings reveal that while retail vendors acknowledge the importance of waste separation and recycling, practical challenges—such as limited awareness, inadequate infrastructure, and cost implications—hinder full adoption of sustainable practices. The study anticipates identifying key factors influencing waste management performance, including economic constraints, regulatory enforcement, and behavioral aspects rooted in stakeholder perceptions. The findings are expected to demonstrate a significant positive relationship between stakeholder engagement, infrastructure investment, and the adoption of environmentally sustainable waste practices. Furthermore, the research aims to develop a conceptual framework integrating best practices, stakeholder participation, and policy interventions to foster sustainable waste management within retail districts. Contribution to knowledge primarily lies in filling the empirical gap on sustainability practices in urban retail environments, particularly within developing cities where resource constraints are prevalent. The study offers a novel integrated model that combines behavioral insights with infrastructural and policy dimensions, providing actionable recommendations for municipal authorities, retail operators, and community stakeholders. The main conclusion underscores the necessity for multi-stakeholder collaboration, improved waste management infrastructure, and policy enforcement to embed sustainability into retail waste practices effectively. Recommendations include establishing dedicated waste management training for vendors, implementing incentive schemes for recycling, upgrading waste collection facilities, and fostering public awareness campaigns. The study also advocates for future research to explore technological innovations and their integration into existing waste management systems, ensuring continuous improvement in urban retail sustainability initiatives.
