Analyzing Feminist Themes in Contemporary English Poetry: A Case Study of the Women's Literary Collective

Thesis Abstract

This study investigates the manifestation and thematic articulation of feminism within contemporary English poetry through a focused case study of the Women’s Literary Collective (WLC), a prominent organization known for promoting feminist perspectives in literary production. The research addresses the pressing need to understand how feminist discourses are navigated and represented in modern poetic forms, given the evolving socio-cultural landscape and the collective’s significant influence on promoting gender equality through literature. The primary aim is to analyze the ways in which feminist themes are constructed, expressed, and received within the collective’s poetic outputs, thereby contributing to the broader understanding of feminist literary expression in contemporary contexts. The specific objectives include (1) to identify and categorize predominant feminist themes in the poetry produced by the WLC; (2) to analyze stylistic and narrative techniques employed in expressing feminist ideas; (3) to examine the reception of these poems among diverse readerships through online surveys; and (4) to evaluate the influence of feminist theories, such as Liberal Feminism and Intersectional Feminism, on the poetic content and form. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative thematic analysis of a corpus of 150 poems authored by members of the WLC with quantitative data derived from surveys of 200 readers across various demographics. Data collection involves the compilation of the collective’s poetry anthology, supplemented by semi-structured interviews with fifteen prominent poets within the collective. The poetic texts will undergo thematic analysis using NVivo software to identify recurring feminist motifs, metaphors, and narrative structures, guided by theories articulated by bell hooks and Judith Butler. The survey instrument will include Likert-scale items to measure reader perceptions, analyzed via descriptive statistics and inferential techniques such as ANOVA to explore differences across demographic groups. Furthermore, content analysis will be used to contextualize the themes within the broader socio-historical framework of feminist movements. Expected findings suggest that contemporary English poetry by the WLC prominently features themes of gender empowerment, body positivity, challenging patriarchy, and intersectionality, articulated through innovative stylistic devices such as free verse, stream-of-consciousness, and symbolic imagery. The study anticipates revealing that feminist discourse significantly influences both the thematic content and poetic form, with variations observable across different poet demographics and reader responses. It is also expected that the analysis will confirm the theoretical assertions of Butler's performativity and hooks’ emphasis on intersectionality, illustrating their relevance in contemporary poetic expressions. This research makes a significant contribution to knowledge by providing an empirical, in-depth examination of feminist themes within modern English poetry, an area that remains underexplored in literary studies. It offers an integrative framework combining literary analysis with reader reception studies, thus enriching understanding of how feminist ideas are conveyed and consumed in poetic communities. The findings are expected to inform feminist literary theory, poetry pedagogy, and collective activism, encouraging a more nuanced appreciation of poetry as a tool for social change. The main conclusion emphasizes that contemporary English poetry by the Women’s Literary Collective serves as a potent site for feminist expression, reflecting complex intersections of identity, power, and resistance. Recommendations include fostering further research into digital poetry communities, encouraging interdisciplinary approaches that combine literary theory with social science methodologies, and promoting the inclusion of feminist poetic works in educational curricula to enhance gender-conscious literary engagement. The study advocates that future work should explore comparative analyses across different literary collectives and cultural contexts to deepen insights into global feminist poetic practices.
