Abstract
Drug abuse among university undergraduates in Nigeria is a growing concern with significant implications for the individuals involved, as well as for the broader society. This research study aims to investigate the effects of drug abuse on Nigerian university students, focusing on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of substance misuse. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data on the subject. The quantitative aspect of the study involves a survey administered to a sample of university students across various institutions in Nigeria. The survey includes questions about the types of drugs used, frequency of use, motivations for drug abuse, and perceived effects of drug use on academic performance and social relationships. The data collected from the survey will be analyzed using statistical methods to identify patterns and trends in drug abuse among Nigerian university undergraduates. In addition to the survey, qualitative interviews will be conducted with a subset of students who have reported drug abuse in the survey. These interviews will provide deeper insights into the personal experiences, social contexts, and underlying reasons for drug abuse among university students. The qualitative data will be analyzed thematically to uncover common themes and narratives related to drug abuse in the university setting. The findings of this study are expected to shed light on the extent of drug abuse among Nigerian university undergraduates and its impact on their academic performance, mental health, and social well-being. By examining both the quantitative and qualitative dimensions of drug abuse, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue and offer insights for effective intervention strategies. The implications of this research are significant for policymakers, university administrators, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders involved in addressing substance abuse among young people in Nigeria. By identifying the factors contributing to drug abuse and its consequences on university students, this study can inform the development of targeted prevention and intervention programs to support the well-being and academic success of Nigerian undergraduates.
