The rapid urbanization experienced in many cities worldwide has resulted in a proliferation of small-scale residential developments that often lack integration with sustainable architectural practices, thereby exacerbating environmental, social, and economic challenges. This study addresses the critical need for a comprehensive framework that facilitates the seamless integration of sustainable principles into small-scale urban residential architecture, with the goal of fostering environmentally responsible, socially inclusive, and economically viable urban living environments. The primary aim of the study is to develop, validate, and propose an adaptable framework that guides architects, urban planners, and policymakers in designing sustainable small-scale residential units within dense urban contexts. Specific objectives include examining existing architectural practices and sustainability patterns, identifying key factors influencing sustainable integration at the community level, and formulating a set of design principles grounded in empirical evidence and theoretical insights. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. The qualitative component involves thematic analysis of interviews and focus groups with 30 practicing architects, urban planners, and residents across three diverse urban areas characterized by high-density small-scale developments. As cities grow rapidly, there is increasing pressure on limited land and resources, which often leads to poorly planned housing that is inefficient, energy-consuming, and environmentally harmful. Small-scale housing units, such as single-family homes or compact apartment complexes, represent a significant part of urban development, but there is a lack of a clear, systematic way to ensure these homes are designed and built sustainably.
The main problem this research aims to address is the absence of a comprehensive framework that guides architects, planners, and developers on how to integrate sustainability effectively in small-scale urban housing. Currently, many projects either lack consistency or do not consider environmental, social, and economic sustainability equally, leading to suboptimal outcomes.
To address this gap, the researcher will first review existing literature on sustainable architecture, small-scale urban housing, and successful integration practices. Using this review, they will identify key sustainability principles and common challenges. Then, the researcher will design a draft framework based on relevant theories, such as ecological design principles and urban sustainability models.
Next, the researcher will collect data through surveys and interviews with urban planners, architects, and residents involved in small-scale housing projects in a specific city. The sample will include at least 50 professionals and 100 residents. The data will be analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring themes and preferences, and regression analysis to understand the relationships between sustainability features and user satisfaction or environmental impact.
