Thesis Abstract

The increasing global demand for cultural and heritage tourism has placed tremendous pressure on archaeological sites, leading to degradation of cultural resources, environmental sustainability concerns, and socio-economic challenges in host communities. Despite the recognized importance of balancing conservation with tourism development, there remains an absence of comprehensive frameworks that integrate sustainable practices within archaeological site management strategies. This study aims to develop a robust, contextually relevant framework for sustainable archaeological site tourism management that guides policymakers, site managers, and stakeholders toward effective preservation and socio-economic benefits. The specific objectives include (1) identifying key factors influencing sustainable tourism practices at archaeological sites, (2) evaluating existing management approaches and their limitations, (3) exploring stakeholder perceptions and roles in sustainability initiatives, and (4) designing an integrated framework based on empirical findings and theoretical constructs. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. The population comprises site managers, local residents, tourists, and policymakers involved with archaeological tourism sites across three nationally significant heritage locations. A stratified random sampling technique is used to select a total of 150 respondents, including 60 site managers, 60 tourists, and 30 local community representatives. Quantitative data are collected through structured questionnaires designed to measure perceptions of sustainability, management effectiveness, and stakeholder engagement, with validity and reliability assessed via Cronbach’s alpha (threshold >0.7). Qualitative data are gathered through semi-structured interviews with 20 key informants and focus group discussions with local stakeholders, providing nuanced insights into contextual challenges and opportunities. Data analysis adopts multiple analytical techniques aligned with research objectives. Descriptive statistics, such as mean scores and standard deviations, are used to profile stakeholder perspectives. Inferential statistics, including regression analysis and ANOVA, examine relationships between variables such as stakeholder engagement levels and perceived sustainability. Thematic analysis of qualitative data identifies key themes around management practices, stakeholder collaboration, and environmental conservation issues. The study also applies the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Sustainable Tourism Development Model to interpret findings within established theoretical contexts, leading to the development of an integrated conceptual framework emphasizing participatory management, environmental stewardship, and socio-economic inclusivity. Expected findings indicate that effective stakeholder engagement, adaptive management practices, and community participation significantly influence sustainable tourism outcomes. The research anticipates revealing gaps in current management approaches, including insufficient stakeholder collaboration, limited environmental oversight, and lack of policy coherence. The study also expects to demonstrate that embedding local community interests and leveraging tourism as a conservation incentive can enhance site sustainability. The proposed framework synthesizes empirical insights and theoretical foundations into a practical guide encompassing policy recommendations, stakeholder roles, environmental monitoring protocols, and community empowerment strategies. This research contributes new knowledge by providing a theoretically informed, empirically tested framework explicitly tailored to archaeological site sustainability, addressing a critical gap in heritage tourism literature. It offers a comprehensive model that integrates social, cultural, environmental, and economic dimensions, fostering sustainable practices that align conservation imperatives with tourism development goals. The findings have practical implications for site managers, policymakers, and tourism practitioners, promoting sustainable management practices that enhance cultural heritage preservation while supporting local livelihoods. The study concludes with recommended strategies for policy reforms, stakeholder engagement enhancement, and capacity building initiatives, alongside suggestions for future research to validate and refine the framework across different geographical contexts.
