Thesis Abstract
Smallholder coffee farmers face persistent challenges in accessing stable and profitable markets due to inadequate market linkages, information asymmetries, and limited bargaining power, which hinder their income security and sector development. This study aims to design, implement, and evaluate effective market linkage strategies that enhance market access for smallholder coffee farmers. The specific objectives are to identify existing market linkage models, develop context-specific strategies, assess the impact of these strategies on farmers’ income, and formulate policy recommendations for scaling successful approaches. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis to ensure comprehensive understanding and robust evaluation. The target population includes smallholder coffee farmers within the coffee-producing regions, coffee traders, cooperative leaders, and government extension officers, with a sample size of 300 smallholder farmers selected via stratified random sampling to capture diverse farm sizes and cooperative memberships. Additionally, 30 key informants from marketing agencies and cooperatives are engaged using purposive sampling to gather nuanced insights. Data collection instruments comprise structured questionnaires, semi-structured interview guides, and focus group discussion guides. Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression models implemented through STATA, emphasizing the contribution of market linkage strategies to farmers’ income levels. Qualitative data from interviews and focus groups will be subjected to thematic analysis using NVivo to identify patterns and contextual factors influencing linkage effectiveness. The study hypothesizes that the implementation of tailored market linkage strategies significantly improves smallholder farmers’ access to profitable markets and income stability. Anticipated findings suggest that strategic collaborations with buyer networks, utilization of digital platforms, and participation in organized cooperatives positively influence market access and income outcomes. The results are expected to demonstrate that context-specific linkage models, grounded in supply chain theories such as the Transaction Cost Economics and the Network Theory, effectively reduce information asymmetries and transaction costs, thereby fostering sustainable market integration. The study’s contribution to knowledge lies in providing empirically validated frameworks for designing and evaluating market linkage strategies suited to smallholder coffee farmers in developing contexts, filling gaps related to contextual adaptation and implementation challenges highlighted in previous research. It also advances understanding of how different linkage mechanisms influence economic resilience among smallholders. The main conclusions indicate that coordinated efforts by government agencies, cooperatives, and private sector stakeholders, coupled with capacity-building initiatives in digital literacy and market information systems, are critical for scaling successful strategies. The study recommends the adoption of integrated market linkage models that leverage technological innovations and strengthen organizational networks, alongside policy reforms to support smallholder participation in value chains. Furthermore, it suggests avenues for future research, including longitudinal studies to assess the sustainability of linkage strategies and comparative analyses across different geographic regions. Ultimately, this research aims to inform policymakers, development practitioners, and farmers themselves on effective interventions to enhance market access, increase income, and promote the resilience of smallholder coffee production systems in the face of global market fluctuations.
