The rapid expansion of coral reef tourism in Fiji’s island communities presents an ecological concern regarding how human activity influences reef fish behavior within nearby Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). This study addresses the problem that increased tourist presence and associated reef interactions may alter foraging, schooling, and refuge-seeking behaviors of key reef fish, with potential implications for predator–prey dynamics, reef resilience, and MPA effectiveness. The aim is to quantify behavioral responses of reef fishes to tourism pressures in MPAs and to identify mediating environmental and management factors that shape these responses. Specific objectives include (i) to characterize tourist visitation intensity and spatial use patterns within MPAs surrounding Kadavu, Viti Levu, and the Yasawa archipelago; (ii) to document baseline behavioral repertoires of representative reef fish species (e.g., Chromis viridis, Myripristis berndti, Plectroglyphidodon quinquelineatus, and Cephalopholis argus) and quantify deviations in foraging rate, aggression, and schooling cohesion associated with varying tourist density; (iii) to assess differences in fish behavior between zones with different protection status and enforcement levels; (iv) to evaluate the explanatory power of environmental variables (visibility, depth, turbidity) and management variables (access controls, park fees, interpretive messaging) on observed behavioral changes; and (v) to develop evidence-based recommendations for tourism management to enhance MPA functionality and conservation outcomes. Methodologically, the study adopts a mixed-methods research design combining quantitative focal animal observation and ecological surveys with qualitative stakeholder interviews. The population comprises reef fish communities within three MPAs along Fiji’s main tourism corridors. A stratified random sampling approach selects 15 reef sites per MPA representing triangulated gradients of tourist exposure (low, medium, high) and habitat complexity. At each site, 20 focal-specified fish individuals per species are observed for 10-minute intervals to record foraging rate, trial latency to shelter, swimming speed, distance from divers, and schooling metrics using underwater video analysis and streamlined ethograms. Acoustic and diver-spatial counts supplement behavioral data, while remotely operated cameras unobtrusively capture long-term patterns. Tourism intensity is quantified through tourist-dive counts, boat movement logs, and time-use surveys of operators. Environmental parameters such as water clarity, wind, sea state, and temperature are recorded with standard oceanographic instruments. Data analysis will utilize generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) to test the association between tourism intensity and behavioral metrics, controlling for habitat structure, depth, and seasonality. Multivariate analyses, including canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS), will explore community-level behavioral shifts. A Bayesian hierarchical framework will assess uncertainty and parameter estimates across MPAs. Qualitative interview data from fishers, dive operators, and park managers will be analyzed via thematic analysis to identify perceived drivers, management gap areas, and adaptive responses, with triangulation to quantitative results. The theoretical framing integrates the stress ecology model and the habitat-use paradigm, complemented by the Attention–Demand Model to explain visitor presence effects on fish vigilance and foraging. Expected findings include measurable reductions in foraging time and increased proximity to shelter during peak tourist periods, with species-specific sensitivity linked to trophic level and social structure. Behavior is anticipated to exhibit greater alteration in zones with weaker enforcement and higher visitor density, moderated by water visibility and habitat complexity. The study will illuminate how tourism-driven behavioral changes can influence prey-predator interactions, energy budgets, and reef resilience within MPAs. The anticipated contribution to knowledge lies in providing empirical, location-specific evidence for how recreational activities intersect with protected-area efficacy, producing actionable guidance for policy-makers and stakeholders in Fiji. Recommendations will target tourism zoning, carrying capacity frameworks, enhanced interpretation and codes of conduct for divers, co-management arrangements, and targeted monitoring programs that integrate behavioral indicators into MPA performance assessments. The main conclusion will synthesize evidence on the extent to which coral reef tourism alters reef fish behavior and the degree to which these changes compromise MPA objectives. Policy implications include prioritizing adaptive management that aligns tourism development with conservation goals, investing in enforcement and education, and incorporating behavioral indicators into routine MPA monitoring to safeguard ecological processes and trophic interactions in Fiji’s coral reef systems.
