Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is a common phenomenon in high-density cities, exacerbating the challenges of climate change and urban sustainability. Green infrastructure has been recognized as a potential solution to mitigate the UHI effect and enhance the environmental quality of urban areas. This thesis investigates the impact of green infrastructure on the UHI effect in high-density cities, focusing on the effectiveness of various green infrastructure strategies in reducing urban temperatures and improving overall urban climate resilience. The study begins with a comprehensive review of existing literature on UHI effect, green infrastructure, and their interactions in urban environments. Through a critical analysis of previous research studies, the potential benefits and limitations of green infrastructure in addressing the UHI effect are identified. This literature review serves as a foundation for understanding the theoretical framework and research gaps that guide the empirical investigation. The research methodology employed in this study includes both quantitative and qualitative approaches to assess the impact of green infrastructure on the UHI effect. A combination of field measurements, remote sensing data analysis, and stakeholder interviews is utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of different green infrastructure interventions in mitigating urban heat stress and enhancing urban climate resilience. The findings of the study provide valuable insights into the role of green infrastructure in reducing the UHI effect in high-density cities. The analysis reveals that the implementation of green roofs, urban forests, green walls, and permeable pavements can significantly lower surface temperatures and improve thermal comfort in urban areas. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of integrating green infrastructure with urban planning and design strategies to maximize its positive impact on urban climate. Through a comprehensive discussion of the research findings, this thesis emphasizes the significance of green infrastructure as a sustainable solution to address the UHI effect and promote urban resilience in high-density cities. The implications of the study extend to urban planners, policymakers, and environmental practitioners, providing practical recommendations for integrating green infrastructure into urban development plans and climate adaptation strategies. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on green infrastructure and its role in mitigating the UHI effect in high-density cities. By highlighting the benefits of green infrastructure in enhancing urban climate resilience, the study underscores the importance of sustainable urban planning practices to create healthier and more livable cities for current and future generations.
