Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Urban Heat Islands (UHIs) have become a significant environmental concern in growing cities worldwide due to their adverse impacts on human health, energy consumption, and overall urban sustainability. This thesis focuses on assessing the impact of green infrastructure in mitigating UHIs in a growing city context. The study investigates the effectiveness of various green infrastructure interventions, such as green roofs, urban forests, and permeable surfaces, in reducing surface temperatures and enhancing the overall thermal comfort of urban areas. The research methodology employs a combination of field measurements, remote sensing techniques, and computer simulations to analyze the spatial distribution of UHIs and evaluate the performance of green infrastructure interventions. The study aims to provide valuable insights into the design and implementation of green infrastructure strategies to combat UHIs, improve urban livability, and promote sustainable urban development. Findings reveal that the strategic implementation of green infrastructure can significantly reduce surface temperatures, enhance air quality, and create more comfortable microclimates within urban areas. The results also demonstrate the importance of considering local climatic conditions, land use patterns, and urban morphology in the planning and design of green infrastructure projects to maximize their effectiveness in mitigating UHIs. This thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on green infrastructure and urban heat island mitigation strategies, offering practical recommendations for policymakers, urban planners, and designers to create more sustainable and resilient cities. The study underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to address the challenges posed by UHIs and highlights the potential of green infrastructure as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution to enhance urban resilience and livability. Keywords Urban Heat Islands, Green Infrastructure, Sustainable Urban Development, Microclimate, Environmental Sustainability, Urban Planning.
