Thesis Abstract

**Abstract
** Urban heat island (UHI) effect is a phenomenon where urban areas experience higher temperatures compared to surrounding rural areas due to human activities and the built environment. This study focuses on analyzing the impact of green spaces on mitigating the UHI effect in a city. The presence of green spaces, such as parks, gardens, and trees, has been shown to reduce temperatures, improve air quality, and enhance overall urban livability. The research methodology employed a combination of quantitative analysis, spatial mapping, and field observations to investigate the relationship between green spaces and UHI effect. Ten study sites within the city were selected for data collection, including temperature measurements, land cover analysis, and vegetation assessment. The findings reveal that areas with higher green space coverage exhibit lower surface temperatures compared to areas with limited vegetation. The cooling effect of green spaces was most pronounced during peak heat hours, highlighting the importance of green infrastructure in urban planning and design. The discussion delves into the various mechanisms through which green spaces mitigate the UHI effect, including shading, evapotranspiration, and air circulation. The role of urban planning policies and landscape design strategies in promoting green spaces and reducing urban heat stress is also examined. In conclusion, this study underscores the significance of green spaces in combating the UHI effect and enhancing urban resilience to climate change. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and landscape architects in promoting sustainable urban development practices that prioritize green infrastructure. Recommendations for future research include longitudinal studies to assess the long-term impacts of green spaces on urban microclimates and community well-being. Overall, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the importance of green spaces in creating healthier and more sustainable urban environments, and underscores the need for continued efforts to integrate nature-based solutions into urban planning and design practices.
