Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Urban flooding is a significant challenge faced by cities worldwide, causing immense damage to infrastructure, property, and public safety. The advancement of technology in the fields of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) has provided new opportunities for improving flood risk mapping in urban areas. This research project focuses on the integration of LiDAR and GIS technologies to enhance urban flood risk mapping and improve disaster preparedness and response strategies. The first part of the study involves a comprehensive literature review to explore existing research on LiDAR, GIS, and flood risk mapping. This review identified gaps in current knowledge and provided a foundation for the development of the research methodology. The second part of the study focuses on the research methodology, which includes data collection, processing, and analysis techniques using LiDAR and GIS technologies. The integration of these technologies allows for the creation of detailed and accurate flood risk maps that can help urban planners and emergency responders make informed decisions to mitigate flood risks. The findings of the study demonstrate the effectiveness of integrating LiDAR and GIS for urban flood risk mapping. The high-resolution data obtained from LiDAR surveys enables the creation of detailed elevation models, which are essential for accurate flood risk assessment. GIS spatial analysis tools facilitate the visualization and interpretation of flood risk maps, providing valuable insights for urban planning and disaster management. The discussion of findings highlights the significance of the integrated approach in improving urban flood risk mapping. The study identifies key challenges and limitations faced during the research process, such as data availability, processing time, and technical expertise. Recommendations for future research include further exploration of advanced LiDAR and GIS techniques, as well as the development of user-friendly tools for urban flood risk mapping. In conclusion, the integration of LiDAR and GIS technologies offers a promising solution for enhancing urban flood risk mapping and improving disaster resilience in urban areas. By leveraging the capabilities of these technologies, urban planners and decision-makers can better understand flood risks, develop effective mitigation strategies, and respond promptly to flooding events. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the application of LiDAR and GIS for urban flood risk mapping, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and technological innovation in addressing complex urban challenges.
