Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis presents the development of a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based Decision Support System (DSS) tailored for Urban Planning and Management. The rapid urbanization and population growth in cities worldwide have necessitated the need for effective urban planning strategies to ensure sustainable development and efficient resource management. GIS technology has been widely recognized as a powerful tool for spatial analysis, visualization, and decision-making in urban planning processes. This research focuses on the design, development, and implementation of a GIS-based DSS that integrates spatial data, analytical tools, and decision-making processes to support urban planners and policymakers in making informed decisions. The study begins with an introduction to the research topic, providing background information on the importance of GIS and DSS in urban planning. The problem statement highlights the challenges faced in current urban planning practices and the need for a more integrated and data-driven approach. The objectives of the study are defined to guide the research process, aiming to develop a user-friendly and efficient GIS-based DSS for urban planning and management. The research methodology chapter outlines the approach taken to design and implement the GIS-based DSS. It includes data collection methods, software tools utilized, system architecture design, and the integration of spatial analysis techniques. The chapter also discusses the validation process and testing procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the DSS. Chapter four presents a detailed discussion of the findings from the implementation and testing of the GIS-based DSS. The results highlight the functionality and effectiveness of the system in supporting urban planning activities such as land use planning, infrastructure development, and disaster management. The chapter also discusses the limitations and challenges encountered during the development process and provides recommendations for future improvements. In conclusion, this thesis summarizes the key findings and contributions of the research project. The GIS-based DSS developed in this study demonstrates its potential to enhance decision-making processes in urban planning and management by providing spatially explicit information and analytical tools. The significance of the study lies in its practical application in real-world urban planning scenarios, offering a valuable tool for planners, policymakers, and stakeholders to optimize resource allocation and improve urban sustainability. Keywords Geographic Information System (GIS), Decision Support System (DSS), Urban Planning, Spatial Analysis, Sustainability, Data Integration, Spatial Decision Making.
