Thesis Abstract

This study investigates soil health transformations within a cocoa plantation Cooperative in Ghana, addressing the persistent decline in soil fertility and structure that undermines long-term productivity, biodiversity, and livelihoods. The aim is to evaluate whether soil health indicators improve through the cooperative’s adoption of integrated soil management practices, including cover cropping, organic amendments, mulching, and reduced-tillage, and to identify drivers facilitating or hindering these improvements. Specific objectives are to (i) quantify baseline and post-intervention soil physical, chemical, and biological properties; (ii) assess the spatial and temporal variability of soil health within representative plots; (iii) examine farmer knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding soil management and its influence on soil health outcomes; (iv) model relationships between management interventions, soil properties, and cocoa yield and quality; and (v) propose a scalable framework for soil health enhancement in cocoa smallholder systems. A mixed-methods approach combines a quasi-experimental design with a longitudinal before-after control-impact (BACI) component and an ethnographic KAP survey. The population comprises 1,200 smallholder cocoa farmers within the cooperative and 60 plots undergoing the intervention over two production cycles (24 months). Purposive sampling identifies 20 intervention plots implementing integrated soil management and 20 matched control plots maintaining conventional practices, with a total soil sampling grid of 200 composite samples per assessment round. Data collection instruments include (i) soil physicochemical analyses (bulk density, aggregate stability, penetration resistance, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable bases, pH, cation exchange capacity) following ISO guidelines; (ii) biological indicators (soil microbial biomass C, dehydrogenase activity, phospholipid fatty acid profiles, enzyme activities such as acid phosphatase and urease); (iii) cocoa agronomic data (yield, bean quality parameters, tree vigor); (iv) remote sensing-derived soil moisture indices; and (v) structured interviews and focus group discussions to capture KAP dimensions. Validity and reliability are established through pilot testing, calibration of soil assays, triplicate field measurements, and Cronbach’s alpha testing for survey instruments. Data analysis proceeds in sequential stages. Descriptive statistics summarize baseline characteristics; inferential statistics compare changes between intervention and control plots using repeated-measures ANOVA and ANCOVA to control for covariates, while regression analyses (multiple and hierarchical) model the influence of soil management practices on soil health indicators and yield. Spatial analysis uses geostatistical techniques (ordinary kriging) to map variability and identify management zones. Multivariate techniques, including principal component analysis and partial least squares path modeling, explore relationships among soil properties, biological indicators, management interventions, and cocoa productivity. Theoretical framing draws on the Soil Health and Soil Quality theory, the Ecological Intensification framework, and the Theory of Planned Behavior to interpret adoption dynamics and sustainability outcomes. The study references the Sustainable Livelihoods approach to integrate economic and social dimensions of soil health improvements. Expected findings indicate that plots adopting integrated soil management will exhibit significant increases in soil organic carbon (by 1.5–2.5 g/kg), available phosphorus, microbial biomass, enzyme activities, and aggregate stability, accompanied by improved infiltration and reduced bulk density, relative to controls. Yield and bean quality are anticipated to improve in tandem with soil health gains, though lag effects may occur. The KAP component is expected to reveal that knowledge transfer, peer learning, and perceived benefits strongly influence adoption, while constraints include labor demands and initial input costs. The study will contribute to knowledge by providing empirically-grounded evidence on the effectiveness of integrated soil management in Ghanaian cocoa systems, linking soil biological indicators with agronomic and economic outcomes, and offering a validated, scalable framework for monitoring soil health in smallholder cocoa landscapes. Conclusion emphasizes that sustained soil health improvements are contingent on continuous farmer engagement, access to organic amendments, and supportive policy incentives. Recommendations include formulating a participatory extension model, establishing year-round soil health monitoring with baseline and post-intervention benchmarks, creating micro-credit schemes for organic inputs, and incorporating soil health indicators into certification and premium schemes to reinforce adoption and long-term sustainability.
