In response to the increasing global demand for sustainable agricultural practices, this study critically examines soil fertility management strategies employed by organic vegetable farmers within Greenfield Community, an area characterized by a predominance of smallholder organic farms. The rapid expansion of organic vegetable production has raised concerns over the long-term sustainability of soil health, necessitating a comprehensive assessment of current practices, their effectiveness, and potential areas for improvement. The primary aim of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of soil fertility management practices among organic vegetable farmers in Greenfield Community and to identify factors influencing their adoption and sustainability. Specifically, the study seeks to (1) determine the prevalent soil fertility management practices, (2) assess their impact on soil quality indicators, and (3) explore socio-economic and knowledge-based factors influencing farmers’ management decisions. Guided by the theories of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the study provides a conceptual framework linking farmers’ perceptions, attitudes, and behavioral intentions to their soil management practices. A mixed-methods research design was adopted, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The population consisted of 150 registered organic vegetable farmers within Greenfield Community, from which a stratified random sample of 100 farmers was selected to ensure representation across farm sizes and management styles. Data were collected through structured questionnaires focusing on soil management practices, socio-economic variables, and farmers’ knowledge levels, complemented by in-depth interviews to contextualize quantitative findings. Soil samples from each participating farm were analyzed using standard laboratory procedures to evaluate key fertility indicators such as pH, organic matter content, cation exchange capacity, nutrient levels (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), and microbial activity. The validity and reliability of the questionnaires were established through pilot testing and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.8. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics to profile management practices, inferential statistics including regression analysis to identify determinants of soil fertility and ANOVA to compare soil quality across different management groups. Thematic analysis was applied to qualitative interview transcripts to generate nuanced insights into farmer perceptions and socio-cultural influences. Expected findings suggest that farmers predominantly utilize organic composting, crop rotation, and cover cropping, with variations in practice adoption linked to farmer education, access to resources, and perceived benefits. Improvements in soil pH, organic matter, and microbial activity are anticipated among farms practicing diversified organic inputs, indicating positive impacts on soil health. The study also expects to find significant relationships between farmers’ knowledge and their adoption of sustainable practices, alongside socio-economic factors such as farm size and access to extension services influencing management choices. This research contributes to existing knowledge by empirically validating the linkages between organic management practices and soil health in a smallholder context, thereby filling gaps related to the socio-economic and behavioral determinants of soil fertility practices in organic farming within developing settings. The findings will inform policies aimed at enhancing organic farming sustainability through targeted extension and capacity-building initiatives. The study concludes that effective soil fertility management in Greenfield Community hinges on improving farmers’ knowledge and socio-economic support systems. Recommendations include devising tailored training programs, improving access to organic inputs, and strengthening farmer-extension linkages to promote sustainable soil management practices. Future studies should explore longitudinal impacts of organic practices on soil health and crop productivity to establish causal relationships and to develop comprehensive strategies for scaling organic vegetable farming sustainably in similar smallholder contexts.
