Urban migratory flows increasingly rely on smartphone-mediated social networks to facilitate access to information, resources, and local social capital; yet how these digital networks translate into tangible integration outcomes remains under-examined in contemporary migration sociology and anthropology. This study investigates how migrant smartphone-based social networks influence local integration patterns, focusing on economic participation, social belonging, and access to services within metropolitan urban contexts. The central aim is to elucidate the mechanisms by which digital relational capital mediates integration, and to identify contextual factors that strengthen or weaken these effects. Specific objectives are to (1) map the structure and content of migrants’ online networks in relation to local ties, (2) assess the association between network characteristics (size, density, reciprocity) and indicators of economic integration (employment status, job-search efficiency, income volatility), social integration (sense of belonging, participation in community activities), and institutional integration (utilization of public services, language acquisition support), (3) examine the moderating role of urban context variables (neighborhood diversity, perceived discrimination, digital literacy), and (4) generate a policy-relevant model of smartphone-mediated integration pathways. The study adopts a mixed-methods design, anchored in social networks theory and the theory of social capital, with specific reference to Granovetter’s strength of weak ties and Putnam’s social capital framework, augmented by an analytical lens drawn from acculturation theory and digital ethnography. The population comprises adult migrants residing in three major metropolitan regions selected for high immigrant diversity and varying service ecosystem maturity. A stratified sample of 600 migrants will be recruited using community organizations, language schools, and digital platforms, with targeted quotas across age, gender, legal status, and length of residence. Data collection employs a multi-instrument approach (1) a structured survey capturing network metrics (using name-generator questions with digital linkage indicators), economic and social integration indicators, digital literacy, and perceived discrimination; (2) in-depth semi-structured interviews with a subsample of 60 respondents to explore narrative accounts of digital network use, trust, and service navigation; and (3) digital trace data from participants’ consenting smartphone analytics (app usage, location-based social interactions) for a 3-month observational window. Expected findings include (i) larger and more reciprocated online networks are associated with higher levels of social belonging and improved access to employment and public services; (ii) the presence of bridging ties to host-community actors accelerates language acquisition and reduces time to job placement; (iii) digital literacy moderates the impact of network structure, with higher literacy amplifying benefits in diverse neighborhoods; and (iv) city-level factors condition the strength of network-effects on integration outcomes. The study contributes to knowledge by articulating concrete mechanisms through which smartphone-mediated networks translate into measurable integration gains, informing theories of digital social capital in migratory contexts, and offering a policy-oriented model for leveraging ICT-enabled social networks to support migrant inclusion. Policy recommendations will address digital outreach by local authorities, collaborative service delivery through migrant-centered platforms, and targeted digital literacy programs to maximize the positive spillovers of migrant smartphone-based networks on local integration. The conclusion emphasizes the necessity of integrating ICT-enabled social network considerations into urban integration strategies and suggests avenues for future longitudinal research to capture evolving network dynamics.
