The study investigates how smartphone-based ethnography can illuminate the social, economic, and spatial dynamics of urban informal labor networks in Lagos, addressing a persistent opacity in how informal workers coordinate, mobilize information, and adapt to regulatory and market changes. The central problem is the fragmented, behind-the-scenes knowledge of informal labor circuits that are critical to city livelihoods yet underrepresented in policy and scholarly discourse. The aim is to elucidate the workflows, social ties, and decision-making processes of informal workers through continuous, participant-generated digital ethnography, capturing real-time interactions, mobility patterns, and micro-ecologies of work. Specific objectives are (1) to map the structure of informal labor networks in Lagos and identify key actors, roles, and hubs; (2) to examine how mobile technologies shape information exchange, trust, and coordination among workers; (3) to analyze spatial-temporal patterns of work activities and their economic implications; (4) to assess perceived risks, bargaining power, and coping strategies in response to policy changes and market shocks; and (5) to develop a conceptual model linking technology use, social networks, and livelihoods in urban informality. The methodological design combines ethnographic immersion with a smartphone-driven data collection protocol grounded in actor-network theory and practice theory. The population comprises registered and unregistered informal workers across sectors such as street vending, logistics, daily-wage labor, and petite-scale repairs operating within Lagos Island, Surulere, and Ikeja corridors. A purposive sampling strategy targeted 60 participants ensuring diversity in gender, age, sector, and mobility. Data collection instruments include (a) a bespoke smartphone ethnography app enabling participants to timestamp and geo-tag work encounters, record short audio diaries, and document work-related exchanges; (b) periodic semi-structured interviews to contextualize digital traces; (c) map-based activity diaries to trace spatial routes and temporal rhythms; and (d) digital diaries capturing risk perceptions, social support, and coping mechanisms. Validity and reliability are addressed through triangulation across app data, interview transcripts, and field notes, alongside intercoder reliability checks on thematic coding. Data analysis employs a mixed-methods sequence first, descriptive statistics summarize network size, central actors, and activity frequency; second, social network analysis (SNA) identifies nodes, edges, betweenness, and community structures within the informal economy; third, thematic analysis of qualitative content from audio diaries and interviews uncovers recurrent motifs related to trust, information asymmetry, and negotiation strategies; and fourth, regression analysis investigates relationships between smartphone usage intensity, network centrality, and reported income variation. A grounded theory approach informs iterative theory-building, complemented by GIS-based spatial analysis to visualize mobility patterns and clustering of work sites. The analysis is operationalized through an analytical framework integrating actor-network theory, practice theory, and livelihood resilience concepts. Key expected findings include (i) a multi-layered network topology with core information couriers and peripheral participants, (ii) evidence that smartphone-enabled coordination reduces information frictions and transport costs, increasing task matching efficiency, (iii) distinct mobility regimes correlating with sector and geography, (iv) identified risk factors such as policing, weather, and market seasonality that mediate digital engagement, and (v) strategies of social capital, mutual aid, and adaptive work practices that sustain livelihoods amid uncertainty. The study anticipates that digital ethnography will reveal nuanced distinctions between formal and informal bargaining power, highlighting how technology mediates trust and reciprocity in precarious urban labor. Contribution to knowledge includes advancing methodological debates on smartphone-based ethnography in informal economies, extending actor-network and practice theories to digital-labor contexts, and offering a robust, granular model of Lagos’ informal labor networks that integrates mobile technology, spatiality, and economic resilience. Policy relevance lies in informing urban labor policies, digital inclusion initiatives, and microenterprise support programmes by providing evidence on how mobile tools influence coordination, risk management, and income generation among informal workers. The main conclusion is that smartphone-facilitated ethnography yields richer, temporally sensitive insights into informal urban labor and demonstrates that targeted digital tools can strengthen cooperative networks and livelihood outcomes when embedded within supportive policy and infrastructural environments. Recommendations emphasize scalable digital-mapping platforms for worker collectives, targeted training in digital literacy and data-sharing ethics, and policy measures that acknowledge and formalize productive informal networks while mitigating exposure to regulatory risk.
