Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis investigates the impact of virtual reality (VR) simulations on student learning outcomes in high school biology classes. The use of VR technology in educational settings has gained significant attention in recent years, with proponents advocating for its potential to enhance student engagement and understanding of complex scientific concepts. However, there is limited empirical research on the specific effects of VR simulations on student learning in the context of biology education. This study aims to address this gap by examining how the integration of VR simulations into high school biology classes influences student learning outcomes, including knowledge retention, conceptual understanding, and engagement. The research methodology employed in this study is a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative assessments of student learning outcomes with qualitative data collected through surveys and interviews. A sample of high school biology students will be divided into experimental and control groups, with the experimental group exposed to VR simulations as a supplementary learning tool. Pre- and post-tests will be administered to both groups to measure changes in knowledge and understanding of biology concepts. Additionally, student engagement will be assessed through observational data and self-report measures. The literature review section of this thesis provides a comprehensive overview of the existing research on the use of VR technology in education, with a focus on its applications in science education and biology instruction. Key themes explored include the theoretical foundations of immersive learning environments, the affordances of VR simulations for enhancing student engagement, and the potential benefits and challenges associated with integrating VR technology into classroom settings. The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the impact of VR simulations on student learning outcomes in high school biology classes. The results indicate that students who engaged with VR simulations demonstrated higher levels of knowledge retention and conceptual understanding compared to those who received traditional instruction. Additionally, qualitative data reveal positive perceptions of VR technology among students, with many highlighting its immersive and interactive nature as key factors contributing to their learning experience. In conclusion, this thesis underscores the potential of VR simulations as a valuable tool for enhancing student learning in high school biology classes. The findings suggest that immersive learning experiences facilitated by VR technology can lead to improved student outcomes and increased engagement with course material. Recommendations for future research include exploring the long-term effects of VR simulations on student learning and investigating strategies for integrating VR technology more effectively into biology curricula. Ultimately, this study highlights the importance of leveraging innovative technologies, such as VR simulations, to enhance science education and foster meaningful learning experiences for students.
