Thesis Abstract

Amid rapid globalization and socio-cultural changes, indigenous communities face significant challenges in maintaining and transmitting their traditional religious practices, which are integral to their collective identity. This study investigates the role of traditional religious practices in the preservation of indigenous community identities within the context of ongoing cultural transformation and external influences. The primary aim is to explore how indigenous religious rituals, beliefs, and ceremonies contribute to strengthening community cohesion and cultural continuity, and to identify the mechanisms through which these practices influence identity preservation. The specific objectives include examining the types of religious practices most actively maintained by community members, analyzing their influence on social bonds and cultural values, and assessing the extent to which traditional religion promotes resilience against cultural erosion. The research adopts a qualitative case study design, focusing on the Indigenous X community, renowned for its rich religious heritage, located in the southwestern region of the country. The population comprises adult community members aged 18 and above, with a total estimated population of 3,000 individuals. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select 50 participants for in-depth interviews, ensuring diversity in age, gender, and social roles. Additionally, community leaders and religious practitioners were purposively included to gather comprehensive insights into traditional practices and their societal significance. Data collection instruments included semi-structured interview guides, participatory observation during religious ceremonies, and document analysis of community records and oral histories. To enhance validity and reliability, researcher triangulation and member checking were employed throughout the data collection process. Data analysis involved thematic analysis to identify recurrent patterns and themes related to religious practices and identity preservation. NVivo software facilitated coding and organization of qualitative data, while analytical insights were grounded within Durkheim's theory of collective effervescence and Clifford Geertz's interpretive approach to religion, providing theoretical frameworks for understanding how shared rituals reinforce community cohesion and cultural meaning. Expected findings suggest that traditional religious practices serve as vital mechanisms for transmitting cultural values, fostering social solidarity, and asserting indigenous identities amidst external pressures. Rituals and ceremonies are anticipated to function as symbolic repositories of history and collective memory, which enhance a sense of belonging and resilience among community members. The study also expects to find that younger generations increasingly participate in these practices, driven by community-led initiatives and cultural revitalization efforts, indicating a promising trajectory for cultural continuity. This research makes a significant contribution to the field of Religious and Cultural Studies by providing a nuanced understanding of how indigenous religious practices function as repositories and reinforcers of cultural identity in contemporary settings. It extends existing literature by focusing on underrepresented indigenous groups, offering insights applicable to similar communities facing cultural homogenization. By integrating empirical findings with theoretical perspectives, the study elucidates the complex relationship between religion and identity, emphasizing the importance of cultural practices in sustaining indigenous worldviews. The main conclusion emphasizes that traditional religious practices are indispensable to indigenous identity preservation, serving not only spiritual purposes but also as social and cultural anchors. Recommendations include supporting community-led initiatives that safeguard religious rituals, incorporating indigenous religious knowledge into local education curricula, and fostering partnerships between community organizations and cultural preservation agencies. Finally, the study advocates for further research into comparative analyses across different indigenous communities to explore variations in the role of religious practices in identity maintenance, contributing to broader understanding and policy formulation aimed at cultural resilience.

Thesis Overview

This research focuses on understanding how traditional religious practices help indigenous communities maintain their cultural identity in the modern world. Indigenous communities often rely on their traditional beliefs, rituals, and ceremonies to stay connected to their history and way of life. However, as societies change due to globalization, urbanization, and technological advances, these communities face challenges in preserving their unique cultural traits. The study aims to explore the extent to which traditional religious practices are enduring and influential in shaping community identity today. The main problem the research addresses is the lack of detailed understanding about the specific functions and significance of these religious practices in the current context. While previous studies have recognized the importance of religion in cultural preservation, few have examined how these practices are actively used and adapted by indigenous groups in contemporary settings. This study therefore seeks to fill that gap, providing a clearer picture of the role these practices continue to play. To achieve this, the researcher will conduct a qualitative case study of a particular indigenous community that prominently engages in traditional religious practices. Data collection will involve interviews with community elders, religious leaders, and younger members, as well as participant observation of rituals and ceremonies. The researcher will use thematic analysis to identify common themes, patterns, and variations in how religious practices influence community identity. The study will also compare findings with existing literature using a review matrix. The expected contribution of this work is a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between traditional religious practices and cultural identity in indigenous communities. It will shed light on how these communities adapt their practices to modern realities while striving to sustain their core cultural values. The findings will support policy-makers, cultural preservationists, and community leaders in designing strategies that respect religious traditions and enhance cultural resilience. Ultimately, the study anticipates confirming that traditional religious practices remain vital tools in safeguarding indigenous identity amidst changing social landscapes.
