Co-operative societies have played a significant role in the economic development of Nigeria, particularly in fostering community empowerment and sustainable growth. This research project delves into the origin and development of co-operative societies in Nigeria, with a specific focus on the IMT Multipurpose Co-operative Society in Enugu. The study utilizes a case study approach to investigate the historical context, organizational structure, operational mechanisms, and impact of the co-operative society. Through a comprehensive review of literature and primary data collection through interviews and surveys, the research uncovers the evolution of co-operative societies in Nigeria from their inception to the present day. The findings highlight the key factors that influenced the establishment of co-operative societies in Nigeria, such as the need for communal support, economic empowerment, and social cohesion. The IMT Multipurpose Co-operative Society in Enugu serves as a microcosm of the broader co-operative movement in Nigeria, showcasing the challenges and successes faced by such organizations. The research project explores the organizational structure of the IMT Multipurpose Co-operative Society, analyzing its governance, membership composition, decision-making processes, and financial management. By examining the operational mechanisms of the co-operative society, the study sheds light on how it functions to meet the needs of its members and contribute to the local economy. The research also investigates the impact of the co-operative society on its members, the community, and the broader society, assessing its role in poverty alleviation, job creation, and social development.
