Thesis Abstract
In recent years, escalating academic pressures and increasing mental health concerns among university students have underscored the urgent need for effective stress management interventions within higher education settings. Despite the proliferation of various stress reduction programs, there remains limited empirical evidence regarding the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) specifically tailored to address academic stress among this population. This study aims to develop, implement, and rigorously evaluate a culturally adapted mindfulness-based intervention designed to reduce academic stress in university students. The specific objectives include examining the intervention's impact on perceived stress levels, academic burnout, anxiety, and overall psychological well-being, as well as exploring participants’ experiences and perceptions of mindfulness practices. The study adopts a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest control group design supplemented with qualitative interviews. The research population comprises undergraduate students enrolled at a large urban university, with a sample of 200 participants randomly assigned to experimental and control groups (100 participants per group). The intervention group receives an 8-week structured mindfulness training program, consisting of weekly 90-minute sessions grounded in Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) framework, adapted for academic contexts. The control group receives no intervention but is placed on a waitlist. Data collection employs validated instruments, including the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Academic Burnout Inventory (ABI), Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS). To ensure content validity and reliability, these instruments are subjected to pilot testing and Cronbach’s alpha analysis, with all scales producing reliability coefficients above 0.80. Data analysis involves quantitative techniques such as paired sample t-tests and ANCOVA to assess differences between groups while controlling for baseline scores, alongside multiple regression analysis to identify predictors of stress reduction. Additionally, thematic analysis is employed to analyze qualitative interview data, providing insights into participant experiences, perceived benefits, and challenges associated with mindfulness practice. Ethical considerations include obtaining approval from an institutional review board, securing informed consent, and safeguarding participant confidentiality throughout the study. It is anticipated that the findings will demonstrate statistically significant reductions in perceived stress, academic burnout, and anxiety levels among participants exposed to the mindfulness intervention compared with controls, with improvements sustained at a three-month follow-up. The qualitative data are expected to reveal themes related to increased self-awareness, improved emotional regulation, and enhanced academic focus, which mediate the intervention's effectiveness. The results will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the application of mindfulness strategies in educational settings, particularly in culturally diverse university contexts, by providing empirical evidence of its efficacy in alleviating academic stress. This study offers a practical framework for integrating mindfulness practices into campus mental health services, highlighting the importance of tailored interventions that resonate with students' cultural and academic experiences. The findings support the theoretical propositions of Mindfulness Theory and the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, emphasizing the role of mindfulness in fostering adaptive coping mechanisms. In conclusion, the study recommends the adoption of structured mindfulness programs as a cost-effective and sustainable approach to promote student well-being, alongside suggestions for further research exploring long-term effects and implementation barriers across different educational environments.
Thesis Overview
This research focuses on creating and testing a mindfulness-based program designed to help university students manage and reduce their academic stress. Academic stress is a common problem among students, often leading to negative effects such as poor mental health, decreased performance, and burnout. While there are various stress management techniques, mindfulness—being fully present and aware of the moment without judgment—has shown promise in reducing stress in different populations. However, there is limited research on how effective a structured mindfulness intervention specifically tailored for university students is, and how it can be implemented in this context effectively.
The researcher will begin by reviewing existing literature on mindfulness practices and academic stress to identify what methods have been previously used and what gaps remain. Next, they will design a mindfulness intervention program customized for students, including activities such as breathing exercises, meditation, and mindful awareness practices. The study will recruit around 100 university students experiencing significant academic stress, selected through random sampling from different faculties.
The study will employ a quasi-experimental design with a control group. Data will be collected before and after the intervention using standardized self-report questionnaires that measure stress levels, anxiety, and well-being. Quantitative data will be analyzed using statistical tests such as t-tests and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine whether the intervention significantly reduces stress compared to the control group. Additionally, qualitative feedback from participants may be collected through interviews or open-ended questionnaires to understand their experiences.
