In an era of pervasive real-world stressors spanning work, health, and social contexts, adults frequently encounter adaptive challenges that strain emotional functioning and resilience systems, contributing to risk for psychological distress and reduced functioning. This study develops and empirically tests the Affective-Resilience Integration Model (ARIM), which posits that adaptive outcomes emerge from dynamic integration of affective processing, cognitive appraisal, and behavioral regulation across ecologically valid stressors. The aim is to advance theoretical understanding of how affective experiences interface with resilience processes to produce sustainable functioning in everyday environments. Specific objectives are (1) to specify how momentary affective valence and arousal interact with perceived stress to influence adaptive coping and functioning; (2) to examine the mediating role of cognitive appraisal and emotion regulation strategies in the affect-resilience link; (3) to identify individual differences (e.g., trait mindfulness, neuroticism, and executive functioning) that moderate ARIM pathways; (4) to develop and validate a psychometric/functional assessment toolkit for real-world resilience capturing affective, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions; and (5) to evaluate the model’s predictive validity for psychological well-being, work performance, and social functioning over a three-month period. A mixed-methods design is employed, combining an intensive longitudinal component with a cross-sectional validation phase. The longitudinal phase will recruit 420 employed adults aged 25–55 from hospital, education, and corporate sectors, using stratified random sampling to ensure diversity in gender, socioeconomic status, and job level. Participants will complete ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) four times daily for 14 consecutive days, supplemented by weekly brief surveys, to capture fluctuations in affect, perceived stress, cognitive appraisals, and coping behaviors. The study anticipates that higher adaptive cognitive reappraisal, adaptive emotion regulation strategies (e.g., suppression with caution), and efficient executive functioning will strengthen the link between positive affect and resilient outcomes, while high neuroticism and low mindfulness may attenuate this effect. Expected findings include robust cross-level support for ARIM, with significant indirect effects of affective states on well-being and work functioning via appraisal quality and regulation appropriateness, and meaningful inter-individual differences that inform targeted interventions. Contributions to knowledge encompass (i) a theoretically integrated model bridging affect, resilience, and real-world functioning; (ii) validated measurement tools for dynamic resilience assessment in everyday contexts; and (iii) practical implications for workplace and clinical programs emphasizing affect-cognition-behavior integration and mindfulness-informed training. The study will inform policy recommendations for workplace mental health interventions, including just-in-time adaptive support and resilience training that enhance cognitive appraisal accuracy and emotion regulation flexibility. The main conclusion is that sustained adaptive functioning in adults facing real-world stressors depends on the coherent integration of affective experiences with appraisal and regulation processes, moderated by individual cognitive and personality factors. Recommendations include implementing EMA-based monitoring in high-stress occupations, developing brief mindfulness-guided regulation modules, and tailoring resilience interventions to individual ARIM profiles, with further research exploring ARIM applicability across cultural and occupational populations.
