Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Herdsmen brutality in Nigeria has become a significant threat to both lives and socio-economic development in the country. The clashes between nomadic herdsmen and farming communities have resulted in a high number of casualties, displacement of populations, and destruction of property. This ongoing conflict has not only led to loss of lives but has also created a climate of fear and insecurity, hindering economic activities and development in affected regions. The brutality of herdsmen has not only impacted the immediate victims but has also had ripple effects on the wider society. The displacement of communities has strained resources and services in host communities, leading to increased poverty and vulnerability. The destruction of farmlands and crops has disrupted food production, leading to food insecurity and economic losses for farmers and the larger population relying on agriculture for their livelihoods. The inability to effectively address the issue of herdsmen brutality has further exacerbated tensions and deepened divisions among different ethnic and religious groups in Nigeria. This has not only heightened social instability but has also hindered efforts towards national unity and cohesion. The lack of accountability and justice for the perpetrators of these violent acts has eroded trust in the government and security institutions, further fueling resentment and grievances among affected communities. In addition to the human cost, the socio-economic impact of herdsmen brutality is significant. The disruption of economic activities, particularly in the agricultural sector, has led to reduced productivity, loss of income, and increased poverty in affected regions. The destruction of infrastructure and property has also hampered efforts towards development and reconstruction, further perpetuating cycles of poverty and underdevelopment. Addressing the issue of herdsmen brutality in Nigeria requires a multi-faceted approach that encompasses security measures, conflict resolution mechanisms, economic development initiatives, and social cohesion efforts. It is imperative for the government to prioritize the protection of lives and property, ensure justice and accountability for perpetrators, and promote dialogue and reconciliation among affected communities. By addressing the root causes of the conflict and implementing sustainable solutions, Nigeria can work towards ensuring peace, stability, and inclusive development for all its citizens.

The Fulani herdsmen livelihood strategies had resulted in conflicts over the destruction of crops. The environmental degradation is perceived to be contributing enormously to the deterioration in ecosystem services to the environment of various communities. It is to this regard that study wishes to use Buruku local and Anyangba government area of Benue and Kogi State respectively as the case study.

1.2 STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

What really instigated the study was as result of threat pose by the activities of the Fulani herdsmen on lives and socioeconomic development in Nigeria.
