Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide, often resulting in impaired balance and gait in survivors. Traditional physiotherapy approaches have limitations in addressing these deficits comprehensively. Virtual reality (VR) rehabilitation has emerged as a promising intervention to enhance motor recovery in stroke survivors. This thesis aimed to investigate the impact of VR rehabilitation on balance and gait in stroke survivors through a randomized controlled trial. The study design involved recruiting stroke survivors from rehabilitation centers, who were randomly assigned to either the VR rehabilitation group or the conventional physiotherapy group. The VR group underwent a tailored VR rehabilitation program focusing on balance and gait training using interactive virtual environments, while the control group received standard physiotherapy interventions. The intervention duration was 8 weeks, with multiple sessions per week. A comprehensive assessment battery was utilized to evaluate the outcomes, including objective measures of balance (e.g., Berg Balance Scale, Timed Up and Go test) and gait (e.g., 10-Meter Walk Test, Gait Speed).
